Out of the Woods

by Silas

21st-22nd of Deepwinter (selected excerpts from Silas's journals)
---Speaking of the axebeaks, it seems I didn’t have to worry about confronting them when I will return to the stagecoach. Two of the trespassers had already dispatched of them the night before. Those two seemed the most untrusting of me when I approached their encampment. Some of their concerns I can understand. Cass, a human with some severe-looking burns, is the wariest. Apparently, she had spoken to some of the spiders and they had told her that I was coming to ask them to leave, which had offended her.
---
Her longtime companion, the half-elf Verst Bhoursen, seems less offended by my presence if anything wary by standards set by Cass. To be fair, he doesn’t seem to be offended by much at all. He reminds me much of the children that I used to see running around the villages we would pass through, almost new to the world and endlessly curious. He seems quite sweet actually.

The last, the dwarf-gnome Tourmaline, impresses me the most. She seems genuinely kind and like they want to put good out into the world. However, they ride a large beast and have ordained it with the tame name of “Bunny”. I must say, how peculiar. She also was supportive enough to help me lay to rest what was left of Elurd and Kender, whose belongings I have begun to recognize in the possession of Verst and Cass. --- I am glad they have use for them. It allows these two Dryshi Overland employees to continue on in a way. I placed a stone with the Shepherd’s crook over where their heads lay beneath the earth. Tourmaline brought the illusion of flowers over the gravesite. ---

We are heading back to Deadplains. It seems Tourmaline has business there and I will be safer traveling in the protection of a group.

It was such short stop last time that I must have not noticed the Precursors’ ruins in Deadplains. Even from here on the edge of town, I can see their runes on some of the walls. I wonder if the group would be interested in looking at them tomorrow.

I also hope to get into town tomorrow. Maybe the General Store would be willing to pass the mail I have back to Dryshi Overland.
