Being nomadic for most of my life, it had been odd to think that I had been in the same place for over a month. After always having him follow my every step, I thought I could never rest again. But Deadplains had been a break to it. It seems a shame that has now come to an end.
The strange group of misfits that I have fallen in with has realized that our time in Deadplains is over. Strikers are coming with the Census and Deadplains is no longer a refuge. So, we have to drive people out for their own protection.

I had spent all of yesterday planning evacuation routes. The moment the first sign of smoke appeared, I was evacuating the first households, those that needed extra time to get away from the fire. It was a long endeavor. Helping people with their livestock, carrying crying children, rushing confused farmers. Hearts broken as we took away their homes. I wondered, not for the first time, was this distraction worth it?
The sky was red from the oncoming fire by the time I got back to Deadplains. Omar was there with a strange compatriot. The stranger was hard to describe but if I had to, he looked like some sort of pirate deck wizard. Having seen them start the fire, they were looking to arrest Tourmaline, Verst, and Cass. We couldn’t really allow this.
We made short work of them. Omar was quickly downed and I made sure that his friend wasn’t able to cast. A wizard isn’t very good without when they have been Silenced. But we went to strong. By the time we checked our adversaries, they had passed on. For all I felt for Omar, it was strange to see his broken form lying there empty. It reminds me of how little there is for us between death and life. The bridge lies there hidden, ready for us to cross at an unforeseen time.

The next few days were hard. We traveled forth through the haze, looking at what we wrought. As the evening came, each campfire reminded me of another family that we had displaced. Regiment soldiers combed through us, looking to relieve and understand what had happened in Deadplains. Part of me ponders the same questions.
After about a week, we arrive in Sorewood. I wonder, what hazards shall we rue on them?
