Case of the Psychic's Lament, Part 7

by The Shadow

I stopped between the third and fourth floor stories to study the cloud below me. It moved like a living thing but that suggests it's like a colloid. I look for any disruptions like Sable Shadow moving through it, or the fog moving around objects. But I don't see the motion I expect, with the fog moving around lampposts or other objects.

This is more like what Kitsune does when he generates an illusion that can wrap around or even be touched with a 'hard light' construction. Still, if it's anything like Kitsune, this person would have centered the fog on themselves. So the walls would be technically clear, given bushes and lampposts.

Sirens for emergency crews have arrived nearby. My only guess is that the smoke caused a traffic accident.

I move over the building, the climb down. Using a red lens light I try and see if the darkness touches the grass and ground. The darkness is too complete. So, instead I use my skill in blindfighting to listen and track them by sound.

There are five. At least two women and three men perhaps. I hear them talk about 'meeting the neighbors'? Curious. I hear them entering the room that had the gramophone. They call it a 'transmission room' and did find where Makeshift teleported the room interior out of the building.

I do hear a name... Coquatl?

They talk about having to go back and report they're failures. This seems to get them motivated more than before. I hear them searching. It's likely to find where we might have gone. Given that they were willing to look, it suggests one or more has a passable skill at tracking. We'll need to be careful from here out.

Powered? Certainly.

They talk about what they found. But then mention checking the other "emission points" and wondering if they need to check "with above". Curious. Literal above? Or metaphorical? Also, they seem very focused on not failing. They are afraid of something. Perhaps some sort of punishment?

But what?

They mention a place called "Quantum York"? This could be a place where they are from? Then there is another name... Elegast. One of the men.

Kitsune sent an odd text. Something about ooze and an octopus? I make my way over to the nearest building and carefully scale to the top. Hopefully to see some hint as to what he's talking about. If he sent a text, it had to be for a reason. But, I am not about to leave Psyher or Sable Shadow's area.

Then they talk about no names, so they're trying to blend in.

From above, I project my laugh over the area to see how they react. The group of five jump, tense up. I try to intimidate them , it doesn't go well unfortunately. They seem more confused than anything else. At best they are low level minions. Their lieutenant, might have more information. The way they talked, there are dedicated groups for certain tasks. So widespread? Perhaps. It would fit with what the 'Eraser' ranted on about.

I ask where they are from, they say Zanthi? I don't recognize it. But it's a location and something to look up later.

I ask about "Why did you think I was from Boston?" They seem upset about whoever this was. Said his voice was "echo"-like. I've not heard of any hero from Boston. Could they have meant Gotham City? That would connect if they did mean Gotham and explain a great deal.

Again, the 'being neighbors' is unnerving. I don't like the patterns.

I asked "What are you afraid of?" ... the talkative young woman replied "ruining my career..." , etc. She was stalling. I hoped the others can learn more about these five. She's certainly trying to lure me into showing myself by calling me 'rude' , 'a goat' and other weak insults. I'm not impressed.

Why they brought food as a 'gift'? If there is a team erasing parts of the past to alter our world, this would be an attempt to pacify or distract any local opposition.

Psypher brings them a book of maps, gets to talking to the older woman of the group. At least I was a distraction by them thinking I am rude? I'm still suspicious of this bringing food as a means to distract us or have us back off.

He calls out that they are lost? I come down at that point and let them see me. Not thrilled with this entire way this is going at all. Psypher is covering though, saying it is only the two of us. A ruse we'll have to continue... I hope.

So they want to eat and discuss ... something? Psypher suggested a bistro nearby. So perhaps we'll learn something.
