We return to our mansion for the night, sending a courier to report our findings to the Enclave. In the morning, we receive a reply from Sir Ambrose requesting us to meet him in the Yawning Portal, along with some gold. Seeing nothing more pressing to do, we head out for the meeting.
Ambrose reports that the necromancer he'd chased off last night joined up with several others, and that their lair is somewhere in Undermountain. He tasks us with tracking this individual and determining where they've holed up and how many there are. We're lowered into the dungeon and set off.
In one of the first rooms we traverse, there are a couple of shady figures. Olivia approaches them and learns they're students at the University, practicing unsanctioned spells. She gets directions and advice from them, and we move on.
After a brief encounter with a trick sword, we ambush a pair of squabbling goblins (when are goblins
not squabbling?). Moving on, we find a large room with three larger-than-life-size statues of what must be Waterdhavian nobility. Each is labelled with a name (Elyndraun (south statue), Ruathyndar (central statue), and Onthalass (north statue)) in Elven, crossed out and re-labeled with Goblin runes in chalk. Rhen erases the chalk markings. One of the passages out of the hall leads to a corridor with elaborately decorative runes carved into the walls, and another on the door at the end. [Rhen?] takes rubbings of the runes (with my parchment and chalk), then pokes at the door with a stick. The door opens, and we cautiously proceed.
We've clearly entered some kind of throne room, as there is an elaborate throne made of interwoven bones in the center of the dais we're on. In the center of the room is the remains of some kind of creature with leathery wings [wyvern?], and there's another door on the other side of the throne. Someone's behind that door, muttering to themselves.
As we begin investigating the throne room, someone enters through a door on the far side of the room. This appears to be a vampire, but not a particularly imposing one. When they sound the alarm and summon their companions, it becomes clear that they're not actually vampires - just people dressed up to look like vampires, and not doing a very good job of it. They're easy to take out, as is the woman who is probably their leader, dressed in a similar fashion but more sparkly. She activates a nasty-looking creature [flesh golem] that appears to have been constructed from bits and pieces of flesh. This construct is immune to my arrows, but the fire from Alishei and Olivia chases the thing away. In the process, though, Rhen goes down, and I have to pour a healing potion down his throat. All in all, not a very satisfying fight. We hole up in the room behind the throne to rest.
