Refonian

Refonian1 is native tongue of the dwarven Refonians on the island of Refon off the coast of southwestern Adynía, and official language of the Kingdom of Refon which rules the island. Like Dalindreans, Fazeronian and the dialects of the Dvarrans on the mainland, refonian is descended from Katargysian, spoken by the ancient Katargysians who once ruled western Gysikan in eastern Adynía, and is the most divergent of them all, due to refonians' relative isolation from the outside world.
Examples of features which are unique or at least more prominent in refonian than in other eastern dwarven languages include:
  • Pronouncing /n/ in or at the end of words as /nː/, e.g. anen (lamb) becomes annen.
  • Saying /kw/ instead of /khv/; e.g. gvúl instead of kvúl (blood), similar to /kr/ instead of /khr/ in many dvarran dialects.
  • /th/ is sometimes replaced with /θ/; e.g. irtúl (she-bear) is pronounces as irþúl.
  • Growing tendency (especially among commoners) to not distinguish between /z/ and /s/; e.g. beiz (fish) and skalaz (whale) become beis and skalas. This also occurs among the younger generation of dalindreans.
  • Writing System

Like dalindrean and fazeronian, refonian is written using a runic alphabet, though it's quite different from the former due to being derived from a script used in a different region of Katargysía.
