Language and culture share specific relationships within each race and area, with each race having their own tongue. However, most will know a bit of the Common Tongue in order to trade or learn of news. The prevalence of Humans and their locations throughout Starhelm have made the common tongue of Humans the accepted language across Starhelm.
There are other various forms of communication on Starhelm as well, that don’t include the common tongue or racial languages. Thieves’ Cant is one such example that uses code phrases, bits of pidgin languages and Underspeak. Primordial is another form of language used mostly by Druids , Rangers or those who deal with
The Three Pillars. It is an ancient language not heard of in most civilized parts.
The Common Tongue
Known as Kingspeak in
Essillion, in
Avandar it is simply known as Humanstongue. The majority of Starhelm just call it Common Speak, or Common for short.
Alphabet
The alphabet is the same across all of Common Speak, regardless of what you call it. Typically, it is called Runic. The Dwarves have an ancient and vibrant alphabet with many subtleties, called Denethen’s Mark, or Dwarfmark, as referred to in the Common Tongue.
The
Elves and The
Fallen have a flowery and graceful script that has not changed since they were Avariel. The alphabet of the Avariel is almost entirely unknown outside of Elves and The Fallen, and maybe a few very learned scholars of
Gnurich or
Janosis. It is called Gossam Script.
The writings of the followers of
The Three Pillars do not have an alphabet as such but they use symbolic pictograms or designs to provide their meaning.
