Familiars

Often one of the first spells taught in magical schools familiars are magical creatures that serve as the companions of magi across Aesalia. While their initial form is based on the true personality of the caster familiars can be transformed into other forms by the magi and act as their trusted aids in magical matters even serving as conduits for spellcasting.   Familiars often take the form of animals with some being supernatural in nature. Many ‘normal’ animals often have strange quirks however such as rabbits with antlers or mice with arms and legs. Familiars personalities are often exaggerated expressions of their spellcasters that can change as their master develops. This can come alongside the preferred form of familiars which they can echo to their master on request.   Many magical creatures can also be bound as familiars such as wild Faerie Dragons and Imp. These creatures possess often more powers than a regularly summoned familiar but do not exist solely as an arcane entity thus requiring a higher level of care and the risks of mortality.   One notable alternative familiar is a Flameskull. Particularly prevalent in Morilliseum and among necromancers Flameskull’s are the skulls of the dead animated with a spark of their former life through a ritual. It is a common practice in Morilliseum to resurrect ones master, if possible, as a Flameskull to advise you whilst also demonstrate your superiority through subjugation. Flameskull’s are also potent combatants if the necromancer is attacked and bound magically to fight fiercely for their master sacficing their lives where possible. Though treated like familiars Flameskull’s are unable to change shape and instead follow orders to the letter of its creator. The controversial, and often criminal, nature of necromancy means magi with Flameskull familiars are often executed and treated as pariahs if exposed.   Another notable form is the Homunculus. GolemparticularlyTransmutation
