Sir Kasarath Tallender, Hero Against the Hordes (a.k.a. Kas; Kasarath the Purple)

Kasarath Tallender of Azocar was an archmage of tremendous renown. Born to nobility in the Eldessar city of Eldesrand, Sir Kasarath made his name first as a Hero of the Horde Wars, then as an adventurer with the group the Powers Company, and finally as a tireless explorer of the multiverse alongside his partner and fellow mage Captain Tza-reena Windstrider.

Personal history

Childhood

Kasarath Tallander, aka "Kas" was the second son and third child of Lord Johnarin (Jon) Tallander and his wife, Lady Lallana (Lana) Mornglow. Lord Tallender and his house had long been influential scholars and merchants in the southeast of Eldessar and particularly in the capital city of Eldesrand. Kasarath was raised under the traditions of his family and gravitated to scholarly pursuits even as a child.   He showed an inclination for the arcane early as well and was soon apprenticed to the daughter of a fellow nobleman, an abjurer named Draxella Solaran. Kas showed great aptitude and eventually became Draxella's apprentice.

The Horde Wars

Under Mis Draxella's tutelage, Kas learned to use his burgeoning skills to help defend the people of of his home city during the Siege of Eldesrand. Though just a teenager, he proved himself a brave and bold combatant. Many a tale of Lord Tallender's youngster rushing to the aid of his fellows, erecting magical defenses to keep them all safe.   Kaserath completed his formal tutelage with Draxella during the Wars but she ensured that they would continue to work together by securing for him a position with Eldesrand's library following the Wars. Kas was grateful to a point but he dreaded and feared the potential for monotony.

Errant Son

His foresight proved accurate. Kas was a disinterested and often truant researcher. His curiosity was not piqued by heavy tomes and musty scrolls. Instead, he wanted adventure and he spent more and more time in the service of anyone he could make some coin from. This activity got him into trouble at first so he learned all the ins and outs of the secret and silent ways one could get around in the city.   Kasarath became quite the opportunist in the decade following the great Wars. He was very successful outside of the bounds his family provided for him. He relished the adventure and danger but his father and family didn't see things the same way. Much of the decade was spent, as a consequence, feeding a growing estrangement between the two sides. A dozen years after the end of the Wars, the situation was about to come to a head.

The Powers Company

Kasarath's life changed on early spring afternoon in the Valley Market just outside of Eldesrand's walls. Strangers from the north arrived in the market and when they were accosted by local hoods, Kasarath jumped to their aid. The wizard helped the strangers escape their trouble and helped them further by getting them into the city. And, as the situation worsened, Kas helped them escape Eldesrand and even joined in their flight. Then, for nearly three years, he and they earned fame and regard by way of their exploits as the adventuring group known as the Powers Company.

Later Years

Following the dissolution of their adventuring group, the members of the Powers Company all went their own ways. For Kasarath, that meant living life exploring the cosmos alongside his partner and lover, Tza-reena Windstrider. Though they didn't have any children of their own, together they raised Kas's niece Sistinas, whom he took on as a ward the year following the war with the Aramago.   Kas's youngest sister, Lala came to him suddenly one night about a year after the War of the Night King was won. She was in hysterics and in her arms, she held a baby. She begged Kas to take the child and raise her as his own. After he was able to get Lala to calm down, he got the full story.   Lala had been sent away by her father to live in the temple of Marha in the distant city of Kaldar. There she eventually gave birth to a daughter whom she named Sistinas. The child was the result of an affair between her and the man she loved; the crown prince of Eldessar.   Before they even knew of the pregnancy, Lala was betrothed by her father to the son of some middling nobleman from near the Horn Mountains. And Prince August's betrothal to an arranged bride was officially announced.   Now that the baby was born, there was to be no more delay of Lala's duties. She couldn't very well return home with a child in tow for fear it would destroy her family. So she sought out Kas to ask for his help. He agreed and raised the child with Tza-reena's aid for the next sixteen years. And, even though, he would always keep tabs on his ward's doings, he let the girl live her own life while he and Tza-reena lived theirs.

"Kasarath was one of them and if anyone could read his thoughts right then, they would sense his deep feeling of despair. He had not been able to ascertain the source of the dark-robed woman's power because the thought that she was a goddess hadn't crossed his mind." --- "A Gathering Before Dawn"

Author's Notes

Kas and Telekaas

Rui: Matthew, as I mentioned last night, Telekaas is going to be in Kasarath's ear throughout the evening that you guys will be resting ahead of your big fight. Here's his firing volley...: "You know, it pains me...it really does to see Ba'Lial's greatest implement in the hands of one so weak." "One who's not even willing to use it"   "But such as it is; fate. You beat us to Melvin so that's that." "He paid the ultimate price for handing the staff over to you."   "You'll pay the ultimate price tomorrow for taking it from him."   Matthew - I just laugh in his face, “it’s funny to hear you talk about weakness when I see a simpering toady so cowardly he is too afraid to crawl out from under the shadow of someone greater and be his own man.”   Rui - "FOOL! When Ba'Lial rules, we will all be mere servants!"   Matthew: Sarcastically, “oh no you killed Melvin!!!” Serious,” Saved me a trip back to Bral” In response to the servant line, “you just keep believing that honey, hold on tight to those apron strings... sure makes a great rationalization to hide you fear and lack of ambition.” I lean in close to him. “Once I kill your boss maybe I’ll let you come crawling at my feet as well, then again maybe not, wouldn’t want to soil my boots”   Rui - Clarification, you guys aren't in the same room…he's in your head.   Matthew - Then I’ll think at him in a conspiratorial whisper. Instead of leaning in close.   Rui - neat   Matthew - How much do I know about necromancy? Like do I know what the missing fingers mean re: clone.   Rui: Clone is 7th level, right? nope 8th I'll need an Arcana check   Matthew - Nope my shit rolls for last night continue 4on the die   Rui: Nope, sorry Kas is aware of such a spell but he hasn't learned much about it yet so he doesn't know the details of how it works   Matthew: Oh well, I just wanted to slam him about being to cowardly to put his life on the line for something he claims to care about I wonder if I’ll have enough downtime between the end of this and the war to Clone myself, as I don’t see myself surviving using the staff against the demigod
