Falls of Rha

The Falls of Rha are a set of natural falls created as the River Rha makes its way down through the highlands of Glen Conon. The River passes through natural limestone and karst formations forming a set of rapids and falls. The Falls lie just northeast of the town of Uig.

Geography

The highlands of the Glen Conon region provide a natural drainage region for snow melt and rain. As the water moves down the hills and glens, and through the limestone formations as underground flows, several river systems emerge in this watershed. One of these is the River Rha. This cold and swift moving flow travels down through the glens, passing through the town of Uig and emptying into Uig Bay. As several points in the watershed the quick elevation changes result in the presence of rapids and falls. The collective name for these is the Falls of Rha.   The Upper Falls cascade nearly 50 feet over a steep limestone cliff before continuing down the glen. The Lower Falls cascade around 30-35 feet in height, but over a series of limestone steps extending about 125 feet.

Ecosystem

The River Rha watershed provides the lifeblood for both the flora and fauna in the glen formed by the river. The Upper Falls provide a watering hole for local animals and creatures. The Lower Falls provides bathing and watering opportunities.

Ecosystem Cycles

Both Upper and Lower Falls experience heavy rushes during the spring thaw. The Lower Falls in particular become difficult to cross or navigate during the spring thaw.
Due to the swift nature of the River Rha, the Upper Falls do not generally freeze during the winter months. Blockages in the river can cause ice to accumulate above and below the falls. The Lower Falls occasionally develop a layer of ice with some water continuing to flow below the ice.

Fauna & Flora

Both the Falls and the River Rha are home to water-born animals and creatures. Fish, crawfish, frogs, toads, and other river dwellers are present. The Falls and River also provide for land dwelling and air creatures, including, deer, elk, rabbits, squirrels, birds, and others.    Typical river valley flora can also be found, including hardwood and softwood trees varieties and numerous plant species.
