River Rha

The River Rha is one of two major watersheds flowing out of the Glen Conon region of the Trotternish Peninsula.   The River begins its journey from an underground spring far to the northeast in the central valley of the Trotternish Peninsula. As it flows along its journey, creeks and streams from the surrounding Glen Conon hills and The Spine empty into the main flow, creating a cold and swift moving river.

Geography

The River Rha is one of the longest rivers on the island of Sgitheanach Dubh. It empties a large basin of the highlands and chaparral of the Trotternish Peninsula. At its widest point the river is approximately 50 feet. As it moves through the glen and down towards the town of Uig the river gets deeper and less wide, but faster moving.    The river has two major falls. These are the Upper and Lower sections of the Falls of Rha.

Ecosystem

As the river meanders from its point of origin it passes from high chaparral into a glen between the hills of Glen Conon and the mountains of The Spine. The upper river moves through grassy plains and low hills into hilly, forested terrain, ending up passing through the center of the town of Uig.

Ecosystem Cycles

The river moves less swiftly in the upper chaparral and is subject to winter freezing and ice floes. As it passes into the hilly glens it tends to freeze less during the winter months.   Springs thaws increase the river flow rate and size for several weeks, but rarely does the river over flow its banks.

Natural Resources

The river serves as the main fresh water source for the town of @Uig and local farms and settlements near or along the course of the river.
