Balinak Range (BAWL in awk)

the Mountains of Nopum

The Balinak Range is a mountain range situated on the eastern half of the Nopum Peninsula at the northern tip of Novyum on the major continent of Ethae. The range is roughly two hundred miles long, north to south, with its highest peak, Stone Wall Mountain, at an elevation of just over 8600 feet. The bulk of the peninsula's land is taken up by the Balinaks sharp peaks and deep valleys. Its far northern subarctic region leaves the mountain tops covered in snow and fridged mist year-round. The lower altitude zones contrast sharply between steep rocking cliffs and rolling forested valleys.

Wolves, jackels, and bears are the only predators of the Balinaks. These animals, though dangerous, are tame compared to some of the creatures that dwelling the other mountain ranges across Ethae, leaving the Balinaks as some of the safest mountains in the world. Largely avoiding settlement and Humans, these creatures hunt the deer and ibex of the mountains, as well as the abundant colonies of avian life throughout.

Rumors of ancient Dragon lairs laying hidden in the mountains are common in New Open taverns, though little evidence of these actually existing can be found. If dragons did once dwell in the Balinaks, there lairs must be long buried in the glaciers of the mountains. Unlike many of the mountain ranges of Novyum there seems to have never been a Dwarf presence in the range.

The mountains are rich with Silver deposits, making Nopum weathy, as a leading producer of silver in the north. The range is also one of the only known locations to find bauxite ore for the making of Aluminum, a metal created and used extensively and near exclusively by the Nopeli people. The secret to creating aluminum closely guarded among their smiths.
