Chapter 3 Session 5: Jobs, Jokes and Research

General Summary

The party had downtime this session, four or five days until Lyren Killian was ready to move on and so, with free time on their hands, the party decided to train, research and complete their own projects.

• Kodo paid a visit to Lyren to catch up and chat where Lyren asked Kodo's opinion on the two new arrivals Fenbalar and Amrys. Kodo explained that he liked them so far even if they are each strange... though he didn't trust Fen's lust for power and how it seemed to stem from power for powers sake. Kodo also mentioned the fact he felt that Fen's book was alive in it's own way and almost parasitic.
Lyren simply said he'd never seen a wizard who didn't lust after power in his life and that he was in the process of making Fen a mask and wanted to know what Kodo thought.
• Mimsi practised her parkour each day and took the time to practise her reading as well as paying a visit to The Silken Coat to get her own winter gear prepared.
• Olympia trained with Amrys to improve her metamagic
• Thordak did some reading and generally relaxed.
• Fen began to read his book on Masked Magicka and learnt the possible side effects of madness, disfigurement, phantom pain and the risk of losing one's magic forever. This echoed Lyren's sentiment that using Masked Magicka is the equivalent of completing magical surgery on yourself and so was a deeply dangerous practise. Fen, regardless, resolved to keep going.

During this time, the party were approached and discovered several different jobs that were available in the area. The first offer was an individual named Marcutio Euriguez who approached Amrys and Fen to offer them a job, he was robbed on his way to Edmonton by a group of feral Gnomes and so wanted the party to kill the gnomes to set an example and bring him back at least one of the Gnomes in 'good condition' for him to display. He explained that he was from Lakefort and was a well known noble there... he'd also give the party his bargaining chip token if they did the job.
Kodo, Thordak, Mimsi and Olympia then visited The Mage-Slayer's Garb and Curious Curiousity's each of these shops were looking for workers as Ellena Swarov was investigating missing persons cases recently as 12 people in the last month or so began to up and leave town in the middle of the night... certain death for them... she explained they were all young, male members of the community (between the age of 22-45) who had families, romances, jobs etc. In short, they all had something to live for. She explained that if the party were interested she would be leaving tomorrow at dawn.
Finally, Curious offered the party a job to investigate a nearby set of ruins and help her gather some fungi there, though the ruins were haunted by ghosts and monsters that had killed her last mercenary group. The party expressed interest until she mentioned it would be a six day journey... Kodo also seemed to have a slightly negative interaction with her, citing how overbearing, dramatic and chaotic she seemed to be.
The party gathered back together and decided, after getting some more information from Marcutio, that they would leave to exterminate the Gnomes that same afternoon, get the job done quickly and efficiently before resting and leaving at dawn with Ellena Swarov to find out what's been causing these disappearances.

Mimsi and Thordak purchased several different magical items as well as cold weather gear that they haven't yet collected.

• Nikolaus Woven who sold the party more stuff, gave a small discount to Mimsi and Thordak and also told them to look out for a High Elf girl who is looking to join with an adventuring party to hit The Mammoth Peaks.
• Lyren Killian who explained the darker intricacies of Mask Making to Kodo and also asked the firbolg for his opinion on the new party members. He also addressed Fen's lust for power but didn't seem overall bothered by it.
• Marcutio Euriguez who gave the party the Gnome extermination job.
• Ellena Swarov who has hired the party for the hunt for missing people.
• Curious who offered the party the job in the ruins of the witness but also clearly did not get along with Kodo.

Notes

Next session is taking place on the same day and is going to involve travel to the Gnome camp, tracking them down and likely the complete destruction of Feral Gnomes.
