Misttower

Though constantly veiled by a thin layer of mist, this tower can be seen throughout most of the ring. Its shape looks impossible--sculpted from a single enormous block of quartz, like a spindle with an unbelievably thin and smooth base widening to a cylinder marked with balconies, waterfalls, and clinging vines, all the way up to a gently sloping point at the very top.   Misttower is one of the smaller Chapterhouses--so small, in fact, that the Muinteoiri build dorms on the lot surrounding it to house students. It's also famed for its beauty. The creation of the famous Magician of the Mists. this place was meant to be her home and research center. Donated to the academy centuries ago, students relish the quiet peace, the cool air, the sound of rushing water and the gardens within.

Purpose / Function

Home & research facility for The Magician of the Mists.   Now serving as a Chapterhouse, filled with educational resources and facilities to support students of Ioth Academy

Alterations

Internal chambers originally intended as parlors or other entertaining spaces have been repurposed as classrooms.

Architecture

Constructed from magically smooth and sculpted quartz. The base is narrow, giving the tower a spindle-like shape, and rendering it nigh impossible to climb. Most of the decorations of the tower are water features, both internal and external.

Defenses

The stone of the tower is magically fortified, making it extremely resilient. The entire tower is enchanted with Guards & Wards spells and Forbiddances, but almost all the tower's defenses have been suspended. They can be restored in the event of an emergency.   The tower's shape and constant misty surroundings make it nigh impossible to climb. The only way to enter the tower without magical flight is by a staircase of solidified mist. As a Chapterhouse, the staircase is almost always "on," but it can be deactivated to isolate the tower from invaders.   Multiple vantage points all around the tower provide cover and the waterfalls can be manipulated by someone who knows the tower's secrets to become shields and battlements.

History

Construction of the tower began in 6398, when the Magician of the Mists returned to Ioth Academy after a short but successful adventuring career. She intended the tower to be her retreat and a place for her to conduct extensive spell research, manipulating the magic of the Sky Kingdom and the elements of air and water.   Due to magical acceleration, the tower was completed and mostly furnished within eight years, or 6406. Only four years later, the Magician of the Mist left to help Nestor the Pious and their old adventuring party stop the sorcerer Vourauk. In the process, they discovered Vourauk's Vortex, and the Magician of the Mists chose to remain there to protect this dangerous magical site. She donated her tower to the Muinteoiri, who converted it into a chapterhouse for the education of students. The Magician retained a private chamber there on the brief occasions she was able to leave her work of sealing and defending the Vortex.   Given the relatively small dimensions of the Tower, the Muinteoiri oversaw the construction of supplemental student housing situated in and below the magical lake underneath the tower. Students took their meals in the dorms before walking up the misty staircase to attend classes inside the tower.   Years later, after the Death of Erecura, the Magician of the Mists herself passed on, and the Muinteoiri sealed off and magically preserved her bedroom as a testament to her donation and accomplishments in life.   Since then, Misttower has been one of the smaller but more unique chapterhouses. Students there focus on unique spell research.
