    Miscellaneous

For two years, the five soon-to-be founding members of the Assassin's Vine Co., LLC worked as a team. Lady Atraxas provided them with missions, some of which were less morally dubious than others. But the money was good and Lady Atraxas seemed on the level, though it was never entirely clear what larger purpose they might be working towards, if any.

Waking Up in the Village of Belsharrah
    Gathering / Conference

After being drugged unconscious to escape at the end of their last mission, the proto-AVC found themselves in the Village of Belsharrah deep in the Carentan Forest. Awaking in 'Mother Night's Inn', the five adventurers were quickly joined by Lady Atraxas. She explained that international tensions were high and the nations of the Southern Covenant were worried about an invastion from the elven-supremacist Empire of Halaan to the north. When Halaan last invaded a thousand years ago, it devastated the south for centuries.   Lady Atraxas was particularly worried. She has been trying to find the lost laboratory of the famous Feanese inventor Kwalish who disappered 380 years ago. Atraxas hopes that whatever is left in his old lab could help defend the South against any Halaanese aggression.   The proto-AVC were in Belsharrah to meet a recluse named Magren the Cartographer. Magren had a map through the Tanatran Mountains, where Kwalish's final workshop is said to have been located. To protect his interests (and hold onto the map), The Cartographer insisted that his modron assistant Gearbox go along.

The Temple of the Forest Guardian
    Military: Battle

On the road through the Carentan Forest from the village of Belsharrah to the Tanatran Mountains and the lost laboratory of Kwalish, the proto-AVC came upon statues of kobolds. And screaming.   They quickly found a lone medusa valiantly fighting off a pack of kobold warriors. Rushing to her aid, the proto-AVC killed the kobolds, rescued Petra the medusa and listened to her story. She was one of two apprentices of the Forest Guardian Ophion, a minor geshtai in the form of an awakened giant serpent. The other apprentice was an oni named Murgyss. He had rebelled against their master, attacking it while it slept. Now the oni was siphoning off Ophion's power and absorbing it for himself as part of a dark, forbidden ritual.   After confronting Murgyss, the proto-AVC defeated him, driving off the oni and bugbear paladin Saheir. Ophion was rescued, but it was too late. The dying serpent gifted the powers of the Forest Guardian to his remaining apprentice Petra as it died.   Almost as soon as the battle was over, Lady Atraxas teleported to them. "Forget Kwalish. Something more important came up."

    The Death Curse Arrives
    Metaphysical / Paranormal event

Colleagues of Atraxas’s in the Lamplighter Society discovered early that resurrection magic had stopped working, at least more than once. That is, people could only be magically brought back to life once, and that’s it. Those who have already been magically resurrected have started to get sick, including Lady Atraxas. The few who know about it call it the ‘death curse’.   Atraxas' contacts have narrowed down the epicenter of the curse to a handful of locations around the world. For whatever reason, Lady Atraxas thought the source of the magic was somewhere in the jungles of Toathra, sometimes called Chult.   Lady Atraxas teleported all five of the proto-AVC straight from Belsharrah to the docks of Port Nyanzaru.   Her mission for the pre-AVC was simple. She thought that the source of the Death Curse was likely somewhere in the Chultan jungle. The pre-AVC was to find it and destroy it, no matter what.

    In Port Nyanzaru
    Expedition

After a few days, Lady Atraxas began to feel sick, though it only showed when she thought no one was looking. The Death Curse had already begun to eat away at her. And others, presumably.   The proto-AVC interviewed nine possible guides, settling on the native human woman Eku. Her dark complexion, average height, loose robes and local jewelry blended in with the Nyanzarans, though her unusual accent said she came from somewhere else.   In between interviewing potential guides, the proto-AVC found themselves gambling at Nyanzaru's famous dinosaur races, where they met an aged, one-eyed firbolg from one of the tribes deep in the jungle - the cleric Usuteh Ohetu. When Cepheus decided to stay behind with Lady Atraxas, Usuteh volunteered to take his place.   After just a few days, Eku and her charges left Port Nyanzaru by boat, paddling up the Soshenstar River to places few outsiders had seen.

    Expedition

While they traveled, Eku told them all stories of Chult (or 'Toathra' as many natives still called it'). One story of many was that of Ras Nsi, legendary defender of the Holy City of Mezro. One day he tried to seize control of the city with an army of undead, but failed and ran into the jungle. Soon after, the people of Mezro disappeared, no one knows where to.   Ruins were explored, strange creatures were fought, and boredom was overcome as the proto-AVC spent the next eleven days on the Soshenstar River. Finally the explorers an outpost of the Order of Findra, better known as the Findrasi. Like Gnaasha, these knights and their Toathran converts were followers of the Old God and patron of righteous warriors Findra, the Prophet of War.   The Findrasi were welcoming at first, but it soon became clear their leader had gone mad. Escaping their public execution-by-dinosaur right as a horde of Ras Nsi's former undead army attacked, the proto-AVC fled upriver deeper into the unknown.

    The Aldani Village of Mossoth
    Discovery, Exploration

After four days of travel and an epic battle with a pair of froghemoths, the proto-AVC found themsleves confronted by an aldani sentry. They would learn that the aldani were a caishenic people unknown to the mainland (though Usuteh had heard of them). Part humanoid, part lobster, the aldani followed a chieftain named Cien'r, who cautiously welcomed the visitors.   Three factors helped warm the aldani's welcome: The guide Eku knew them, Usuteh's tribe was known to the aldani, and a local vouched for them. Rhanna Cor was a 60-ish metalsmith and cleric of Chan the Earthsister. She had known Eku for years and was eager to hear news of the mainland.   While resting with the aldani, the pre-AVC was first magically contacted by Lady Atraxas. She and Cepheus had discovered that a likely source of the Death Curse was somewhere in the lost city of Omu - one of five cities of the last great pan-Chultan/Toathran civilization, along with Mbala, Orolunga, Nyanzaru and holy Mezro.   After four days of resting (and getting directions), the pre-AVC set off for the 1,800 foot tall mesa they could see three days journey through the jungle to the west in the ruins of Mbala. Hopefully they could see something useful from up there. More importantly, maybe there were clues to Omu's location to be found in the ruins Mbala - or its sister-city Orolunga.   It was also here, resting among newfound friends and allies, that Chego, Gnaasha, Jesik, Pop, and Usuteh first gave themselves a name - the Assassin's Vine Company, LLC after the ubiquitous carnivorous plant.

    The Ruins of Mbala
    Expedition

As the AVC approached the base of the mesa, it became clear that they were walking through ruins devoured by the jungle. Eku deduced that it was the ruins of the fabled city of Mbala, which was destroyed in a thirty-year war with its neighbor Orolunga over two hundred years ago.   At the top of the mesa they met a middle-aged elven peasant woman, who was revealed to be the hag Naputu. After defeating a flesh golem, two flaming skulls, a pack of flying monkeys and Naputu herself, the AVC interrogated the hag. They learned that Ras Nsi was still alive and lpanned to bring Nishoggua the Night Serpent through to this reality. Dendar is prophesied to enter the world through a certain gate and devour the sun. Only those faithful to Dendar will survive.   Looking south across the landscape, they saw a giant boulder slowly twisting as it floated in the air, as well as what looked like the ruins of a crashed airship in the branches of distant trees. Both were far away. Closer they saw a lone pyramid rising vine-covered out of the jungle thirty miles away. The ruins of Mbala's sister-city Orolunga, destroyed in same war that consumed Mbala.

The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan Discovered
    Discovery, Exploration

As Lady Atraxas grew sicker, she sent Cepheus to recruit another adventuring party to follow the AVC. Between connections in Port Nyanzaru and a few met on the road, a group consisting of Cepheus the Sage, the shifter barbarian Darien Rashev, LeChiffre the wood elf monk, the half-orc cleric-monk LaDuke, Quelk the goblin sorcerer-cleric, the hobgoblin necromancer Wozzledrag the Wise and (briefly) the satyr Orangebeard.   On the road south to what they hoped was the AVC and Omu, they literally fell through the jungle floor and into an underground temple system. After many adventures and many days underground, they learned that they were in the long-lost temple-tomb of Tamoachan the Cruel. Tamoachan ruled a petty Olman kingdom just before the Olman civilization collapsed more than sixteen hundred years ago.   Once they found their way out, climbing to freedom and fresh air halfway up a vine-covered pyramid, they saw a strange sight. A few hundred yards away, a well-dressed Chultan human male and an armored female bugbear were having a picnic. The human sipped a glass of wine while the bugbear lazily cooled herself with a folding fan. They got up from their lunch and approached, though kept their distance. He sighed and looked at her. "It's only one of them. It isn't time yet." and the two floated up into the air and disappeared.   As they continued south, they met a delegation of batiri goblins on road. Camping with them for safety, their leader - High Priestess Ohra - was appalled at their ignorance of Chult, which she called Toathra. Over the course of the night she told them the story of Chult, including the story of Tamoachan.   They stayed with the batiri for the next several days. They were on their way to a grand council of the Toathran people, called to decide the fate of Ecthenna the Wraith King and his undead army. There had been an attack on the aldani village of Mossoth, and something must be done.   When the soon-to-be-AVC warriors arrived at Mossoth they found that Cepheus' old companions had been there, and had turned the tide of the Battle of Mossoth at the last minute. Among those they met at Mossoth was the swashbuckling otterfolk druid and ship captain Ingolfur, who joined them when they continued south.   After more travel south and more violent intereactions with local wildlife, the discoverers of the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (and Ingolfur) found themselves at the edge of Omu. Magical torchlight flickered through the open windows of the Assassin's Vine Hotel and Day Spa as they called out quietly to those on watch. Though they did not know it, they were home.

    The Ruins of Orolunga
    Discovery, Exploration

The AVC spent days hacking their way through the jungle to the ruins they had seen from the top of Mbala. Finding their way to the base of the large stepped pyramid, they were confronted by the some harmless chwinga - elemental forest spirits sometimes called the Children of Ubtao. Solving the puzzle of the pyramind with the little chwingas' help, the AVC found themselves in the temple ruins at its top.   Entering the ruins, they found themselves in Orolunga as it was. The temple was in good repair and the view down to the city showed bustling streets, brightly colored clothes and a wild diversity of creatures and peoples. Standing in the temple was a beautiful, green-skinned naga, serpent from the waist down and elven from the waist up. She was draped in expensive cloth and adorned with gold jewelry. Introducing herself as Saja N'Baza, the faded geshtai of Orolunga, the naga spirit explained that they were seeing Orolunga as it was a century before its fall in the Orolunga-Mbala War.    She told the Assassin's Vine Co. many things about Chult. Among other things, she told them about Tamoachan and the Plague Year, about Acererack and the fall of Omu, and about noble Ras Nsi and the disappearance of holy Mezro. With good wishes and parting gifts for all of them, the geshtai Saja N'Baza turned back to her memories and was gone.   After long days of travel back from Orolunga to the aldani village of Mossoth, night fell as the AVC approached. This time there was no sentry. Instead there was the distant sound of steel on steel and the screams and cries of the dying. What would quickly become known as the Battle of Mossoth had begun.

    Military: Battle

The AVC rushed to the aid of a Mossoth under siege from a small army of zombies, specters and wights. Commanding them all was Ecthenna the Wraith King, Ras Nsi's chief general in the attempted conquest of Mezro. Arrayed against the undead army were makeshift barricades and fully armored aldani warriors led by a Chieftain Cien'r. As the undead approached, so did the treant Sparrowcrown and the minotaur cleric-smith Rhanna Cor riding an armored triceratops.   The battle was vicious but brief. The AVC's clerics' ability to destroy whole swaths of the weaker undead turned the tide and the village's defenders routed Ecthenna and his surviving lieutenant wights. The AVC were hailed as heroes and liberators and loaded with provisions as they made ready to move on a few days later.

    Discovery, Exploration

As the AVC settled in to rest as far from the dragon as they could get, they received their final message from a dying Lady Atraxas.   Her colleaguese in the Royal Magocratic Society and the Lamplighter Society had discovered source of the death curse - the archlich Acererak.   Centuries ago, the planewalking archlich Acererak enslaved the Omuans, forcing them to build a temple under Omu. Recently, Acererak secretly had an arcane engine called the Soulmonger built to collect the souls of the dead. It is unclear why. Several more parties of adventurers headed south into the jungle to find and destroy the Soulmonger.   There was no sign of Murgyss or the bugbear paladin Saheir, though there had been a string of unexplained murders in the city. But since there were more and more strangers arriving as news of the Soulmonger and its location spread, there were too many suspects.

    The Lost City of Omu
    Discovery, Exploration

After breaking camp, the AVC set forth in the direction they hoped Omu was in. Through divine guidance or dumb luck, after three days they came upon the city. Creeping through the underbrush after a fight with a pair of dire owlbears, the party found themselves at the top of a cliff looking down at the sunken city ringed with more cliffs. All along the cliff edge around the city were evenly spaced stone statues of pteradactyls. A river ran through it to a lake of lava at the other end of the city, giving Omu both a faint reddish glow and a constant source of steam obscuring it from above.   Working their way around to the northern edge of the lost city, they found an old road leading down into Omu. Warnings were scrawled on the stone walls of outbuildings as they entered. They were dutifully transcribed and largely ignored.   The AVC found a building on the edge of the city that still seemed structurally sound and made camp. Jesik, able to both shape stone and grow the local trees, began the slow process of fortifying their chosen base of operations.   Their first night in Omu, they watched from the darkness as a group of vegepygmies sacrificed a bound and gagged grung to their gods by tossing it down into the lava.   Not long after the AVC began exploring the city, a stranger appeared. The fire genasi cleric-mage Iskra Askar emerged from the jungle one night, the only survivor of her expedition. Iskra was a member of the Lamplighter Society and follower of the Holy Twins Basheira and Oryaan. She brought knowledge and healing magic, both in short supply this deep in the jungle.   On one of their early expeditions, they came across a recent battlefield. A group of Grey cultists had fought with a party of yuan-ti. The yuan-ti had won, as they had marked a nearby wall with the sign of Nishoggua the Night Serpent. Buried beneath rubble and half-dead, they also found a survivor of the attack. Dr. Orvex Ocrammas was a professor of Chultan Studies at Haoma University in Nymera. He was hired by the Grey for an exhorbitant amount of money to help them uncover the secrets of Omu.

Shrines of the Nine Trickster Gods
    Discovery, Exploration

The AVC learned that to open the tomb where Acererack had trapped the nine trickster gods of Omu, they needed to collect nine keys in the form of carved stone cubes. Each trickster god had a shrine somewhere in Omu, and each shrine protected a cube. It was unclear who maintained the shrines.   After several weeks, the AVC had a majority of the cubes, and knew that somewhere in the city the surviving Grey cultists might have some and the fallen Mezroan paladin turned yuan-ti leader Ras Nsi must have others.   In the course of their explorations, they came upon the half-mad tabaxi hunter Bag-of-Nails, enticing him to join their cause if they would help him find his lost son. And give him a warrior's death - a pact was made between Bag-of-Nails and Usuteh to fight to the death after certain things were taken care of.   The AVC was ambushed repeatedly by yuan-ti warriors who claim Omu as their own.   While exploring, a floor collapsed revealing a previously sealed underground shrine. In the shrine was an artifact called the 'Horn of Ubtao' whose command phrase is, “Hear the Voice of Ubtao and watch his enemies fall”

Knowing that some of the Shrines of the Nine Trickster Gods were empty of puzzle cubes, the AVC realized other must have collected some of them. They decided to find the Grey compound and acquire their cubes one way or another.   On the way north to where they assumed the Grey had their base, the AVC faced a near-fatal grung ambush.   When they finally found the walled compound, the AVC were shocked to find that the elven wizard Valindra Shadowmantle (from the Heart of Ubtao) was the leader of the cultists. Willing to negotiate, she invited the AVC delegation into their compound. Some of the grung are won over, but most of the Grey cultists and native Chultan mercenaries stayed aloof and wary.   Valindra offered all of their cubes for the head of Ras Nsi, insisting that his plans to unleash Nishoggua the Night Serpent was a more immediate danger than a Death Curse that almost exclusively affected the very powerful and/or very rich. The AVC accepts the deal.

Hacked to pieces, the last thing any of them saw were yuan-ti closing in on them.   They awakened in prison pits, having been brought back to life by Ras Nsi. Now slowly dying from the Death Curse, they stayed in prison for days. During that time they met Tamsin and Tavish, creepy siblings who had been captured by the yuan-ti shortly after arriving in Chult.   In time Ras Nsi's right hand Fenthaza made them a deal - kill Ras Nsi when he grants an audience and she would let them escape.

Surprise Attack on the Assassin's Vine
    Military: Skirmish

By this time, the Assassin's Vine Company had grown to almost two dozen sages, explorers and warriors. As more mainlanders flooded Chult in hopes of ending the Death Curse, some inevitably found themselves in the right place (if only by accident). In addition to those already mentioned, they were joined by the tabaxi samurai Kyattonaito, the aasimar bard Elaria Vyshaan, rabbitfolk monk El Ahrairah, and the otherplanar armored minotaur Yaphet Koto - as well as Nemo the drow paladin-warlock incubating inside Yaphet at this time.   While the AVC rested and planned their next move, a surprise attack came in the night. Fire arrows ignited the parts of the Assassin's Vine made of wood, drawing many to fight the fires while a smaller number fought their attackers. Thoser attackers were an alliance of several who bore the AVC grudges. Murgyss the oni was there, as was Tloques the vampire whose axe Darien had stolen. A pack of grey troll hunters sniped from a distance under the command of Saheir, Murgyss' bugbear paladin companion. The defenders were joined unexpectedly by an ancient Omuan warrior erupting from the ground. Ruh K'Tal was called forth by the presence of Tamoachan's vampire captain.   The battle was brutal, but turned in the AVC's favor. Several fighters were brought back from the brink of death by the cleric Gnaasha after a dramatic leap from the fires on the roof. Ruh K'Tal lost a leg.   The fight could have turned another way if Saheir, seeing the growing madness in Murgyss, led the surviving gholkindr, or grey trolls away into the jungle. She later communicated with the AVC through sending stones found on Murgyss, saying he had not been wrong in the beginning but had succumbed increasingly to a madness. She thought his attempt to siphon Ophion's power months earlier had damaged his mind.

    Massacre of the Grey
    Military action

The AVC sent a delegation to negotiate for the Grey's puzzle cubes. When they got to the compound all they found was death. While they didn't find Valindra Shadowmantle's corpse, it looked most - if not all - of the Grey cultists were dead, along with an impressive number of yuan-ti. An armored triceratops lay dead besides the gate it smashed down. Both were riddled with arrows and scorch marks.   Investigating the scene, the AVC discovered tracks heading south away from the compound. There were many enormous serpent tracks, but humanoid tracks as well. Assuming that meant Grey captives, the AVC planned another assault on the yuan-ti compound. Both to rescue their captives and to secure the remaining puzzle cubes.

Toathran Liberation Army Arrives in Omu
    Military action

A delegation of two dozen warriors and mercenaries of the Toathran Liberation Army arrived in Omu, led by the AVC's old guide Eku, High Priestess Ohra of the batiri goblins, and Chieftain Cien'r of the aldani lobsterfolk.   Valindra Shadowmantle and one of her two lietuenants are with them, the only survivors of the Grey massacre. When they saw Valindra, Tamsin and Tavish dropped what they were doing and rushed to her, screaming, "Mother!". Valindra was shocked and clearly shaken, but she dropped to her knees and hugged them, tears streaming down her face. She whispered to them and pulled them aside, out of view of the others.   Usuteh broke the somewhat awkward silence by loudly announcing he was making breakfast.  Several others joined him in the large makeshift kitchen being built in the Assassin's Vine.

    Extermination of the Yuan-ti
    Military action

A team from the AVC returned to the Temple of Nishoggua the Night Serpent, this time entering the compound stealthily. They oversaw the wholesale slaughter of nearly every yuan-ti in the compound. After retreating to rest, their second foray into the temple complex saw the corpses of their earlier victims stacked around the pool of blood in the center of the temple. The remaining priests of Nishoggua were killed, but an enormous fifteen foot tall, seven-headed yuan-ti anathema emerged from the blood pool.   The anathema and its yuan-ti abomination retainer left before they could be defeated, leaving Kyattonaito polymorphed into a sperm whale. The remaining AVC members had to gruesomly, slowly beat the whale to death so that Kyattonaito could transform back.   Ras Nsi and the yuan-ti were destroyed, along with their plans to unleash Nishoggua. Except - where did the yuan-ti anathema go? What was its role in Ras Nsi's plans? Were there other yuan-ti colonies in Toathra? These were questions that had to wait.

    Iskra's Dream
    Discovery, Exploration

While resting hidden outside the yuan-ti complex, the fire genasi Iskra Ashar dreamed a vision of Eku, who passed on word that reached the others from the outside world. The Lamplighter Society in Mazrendaram discovered Acererack's secrets.   Acererack is breeding a death god. He has found a fading infant geshtai born of the incoherent prayers of a village whose children died of plague. He named is Cthael. Acererack built an arcane engine called the Soulmonger to capture the souls of the dead and feed them to Cthael. When it is strong enough, well, no one knows exactly what Acererack has planned. When a new god of death is created by an immortal planewalking lich, any plans will be cataclysmic.

Into the Tomb of the Nine Gods
    Military action

The city of Omu, abandoned for centuries, was finally free of threats once again (except for the King of Feathers). Ras Nsi and his yuan-ti were utterly destroyed (with the exception of two who escaped). The Assassin's Vine Company - now two dozen strong - convened with their allies and new neighbors from the Army of Toathran Liberation. A strike force composed of Iskra, Kyattonaito, Nemo, and Usuteh would unlock the Tomb of the Nine Gods and explore as deeply as they could. Other teams would fan out to pacify threats in the region, but most would stay at their base to make sure it stayed in their hands.   On their way to the Tomb, the AVC encountered the Queen of Feathers (not the King) and her children.  Several of her children were killed and the Queen driven off.   The four tasked with exploring the Tomb successfully solved the puzzle of the cubes and went in. It has been two days. Nothing has been heard from them.

    To Hunt a Dragon
    Discovery, Exploration

A call is put out by the aldani chieftain Cien'r of the Toathran Liberation Army to deal with a young red dragon to the west. AVC encountered it on the way to Omu.
An AVC team volunteered to track it down and get rid of it: Darien the shifter barbarian-rogue, Quelk the goblin storm sorcerer-cleric, Chego the tabaxi rogue-barbarian, and Ingólfur the otterfolk rogue-druid.
Flown to the Valley of Lost Honor from Omu by pteradactyl riders.
Followed signs through the jungle for five days. Found a worn but well-maintained mine entrance with destroyed outbuildings.

    Military: Battle

They meet two albino dwarves (or khoruna as they call themselves). One is clearly broken and insane. They explain that Hrackamar is a khoruna outpost where metalsmiths from all over Toathra go to train. Weeks ago, a force of kobolds and firenewts attacked, killing all the other khoruna as well as their apprentices. The kobolds left down the tunnel to the khoruna mine. The AVC kills all the firenewts except one (see below). Discover industrial-scale forge surrounded by lava. Find a stockpile of simple buy well made steel swords, axes, spears and armor. They also find an unopened vault full of ingots of adamantine, gold, silver and iron.

    Life, Identity

Itrin the Firenewt is the last survivor of the AVC's massacre of the firenewts in Hrackamar Forge. It surrenders. The AVC ties it up and takes it with them. Besides providing comic relief, Itrin seems most interested in going to Omu.
