Ismark Kolyanov (iz-mark cohl-yah-noh-v)
Ismark the Lesser was, for a short time, the only child of the burgomaster Kolyan. His mother died shortly after he was born due to complications from childbirth. He was an extremely lonely and melancholy child, proving beyond a doubt he had a soul with his frequent crying spells.
Ismark's loneliness didn't last forever. When he was about nine, his father returned from a hunting trip with a young girl in tow. She only remembered her own name: Ireena. Kolyan took her in as his own daughter. The two children immediately loved one another, and grew up very close. Despite Kolyan forbidding it, Ismark gave Ireena secret lessons in swordfighting, and encouraged her learning some magic to defend herself.
Ismark grew up as an emotional but unremarkable man. He practiced swordfighting with the distant lofty goal of defeating Strahd, but was more well-known in the village of Barovia for being a bleeding heart and a somewhat overbearing and overprotective older brother: a trait which grew to overwhelming if Ireena caught Strahd's eye.
