Fiaéain Uhl'Olathe IV (fi-ah-YAIN ul-oh-LOTH)
Biography
Fiaéain Arianwen Uhl'Olathe was born in 398 YC to Fiaéain III (then the Crown Princess of Olathe) and Ariathís Ist'Olathe. She is the elder of their two children; her brother Ariathain was born in 442. Until her mother's death in 557, she held the title of Princess of Olathe, as her mother was Crown Princess while her grandmother (Fiaéain II) ruled. She was Crown Princess for almost a century between her mother's death and her grandmother's death in 640. That year, at the age of 242, she became Queen of Olathe. Like many Lathléar aristocrats, Fiaéain has married multiple partners. She was first wedded in 583 to Prince-Consort Aeríle Er'Aldomis, a scion of the House Uhl'Aldomis, a highly-regarded bloodline of sorcerers known to bear a Lunar Gift second in power only to the House Uhl'Olathe. Though their marriage was arranged, Aeríle and Fiaéain maintain an affectionate relationship. Aeríle serves as Fiaéain's husband for all matters of ceremony. In 645, with Aeríle's blessing, Fiaéain wedded Aruvagn Ist'Olathe, a military general from a Lathléar family of no renown who nevertheless possessed a Lunar Gift. After their marriage, Fiaéain bestowed the title of Archduke upon Aruvagn, making him the commander in chief of the Olathian military. Fiaéain has four children, all of whom were fathered by Aeríle: Prince Aelerís (b. 589), Crown Princess Fiaéain Aerine V (b. 594), Prince Aelanor (b. 656), and Prince Aesling (b. 699).Reign
By far the defining moment of the reign of the Fourth Queen of Olathe is Fiaéain's assertion of Olathian independence in 714, shortly after the Severing. However, it would be a disservice to her time as Queen to gloss over her other accomplishments. A few major achievements of her reign are detailed below.Establishment of First Arcane Academy
In 655, with Fiaéain's patronage, the Academy of the Arcane Arts opened in the city of Cathair. No institute of arcane scholarship had ever existed within Olathe prior to the opening of the Academy, and its inauguration was celebrated as a sign of the nation's progress. The Academy recruited distinguished academics from across Aotra to serve as its professors, and in the half-century since its founding, it has established a reputation for itself as a genuinely high-quality institution.Removal of Solisvaran Troops from Olathe
Since Solisvar's annexation of Olathe, Solisvar has maintained a military base in Olathe, with the expressed intent of being able to provide military support to Olathe in the event of threats from without. Despite this alleged supportive intention, many in Olathe have long been uncomfortable with the Solisvaran military presence; the presence of Solisvar's Royal Defense Force often seemed more like an insurance policy against anti-Solisvaran action by Olathe than a benevolent defender of the nation. The Olathian people celebrated when, in 689, Fiaéain successfully completed negotiations with Solisvar to remove their troops from Olathe, arguing that Olathe's own military was most definitely powerful enough to manage its own defense. The removal of the Royal Defense Force from Olathe was completed in 692.Diplomatic Relations with Oristhane
The nation of Oristhane has, since its establishment as a theocracy governed by the hierarchs of the The Cult of Istha, maintained a tense relationship with Solisvar. Olathe's tendency towards isolationism has meant that in the time since its annexation by Solisvar, it has never negotiated any more productive relationship with Oristhane than the one possessed by Solisvar. However, Fiaéain sought to change this after the ascent of the most recent High Priestess of Oristhane, Marini of Khara. An exchange of diplomatic missions eventually led to the first visit of a head of state to Olathe since the founding of the Circle of Nine when, in 710, High Priestess Marini of Khara visited the court of the Lunar Sovereign. Fiaéain reciprocated with a visit to the Shadowless City later that year. The two nations initiated trade relations and opened their borders to each other shortly after, permitting travel into and out of Olathe with a level of ease the kingdom has never known.Declaration of Olathian Independence
Some Olathians believe that Fiaéain's assertion of Olathian independence from Solisvar in 714 was entirely an opportunistic move, taking advantage of the worldwide chaos sown by the Severing to quietly make a move that would have otherwise provoked international upheaval. Others assert that she has planned to throw off Solisvaran control ever since she took the throne. In reality, few can know with any certainty how long she had been planning this move. Even more important than its inception is its effects: like nothing else, it has unified and rallied Olathe behind its queen. Despite that it has continued unchallenged thus far, the movement towards independence for Olathe has not gone unnoticed.Relationships
