Aethillian Kindlespire

Overview

Aethillian Kindlespire is a wizard from Ebrion who specialises in the alteration of spells. He has been a close friend of the High Magus, Elorin Felter since the two were apprentices.   Aethillian's familar takes the form of a rat, called Barnabus.

Algernon Kinkyspank

Whilst Kindlespire was once a highly respected and powerful mage, his power and reputation diminished significantly as a result of a magical injury suffered whilst battling a Ulitharid during the Incident at Amar Creige (see below). As a result of this injury, Aethillian suffered a massive mental break, resulting in the creation of a split personality in the form of Algernon Kinkyspank. While the split allowed Aethillian to survive the encounter, he now wrestles for control of him body and mind with this chaotic alter-ego.   Algernon manifests as the polar opposite to Aethillian's studious and serious personality; presenting himself as a chaotic and hedonistic madman, Algernon takes great pleasure in dragging Aethillian away from his work to go on unurly benders. Just as Aethillian resents Algernon for the damage caused to his reputation, Algernon deeply resents Aethillian for wasting their early years with his nose stuck in a book.   While Algernon's appearances used to happen seemingly at random, with the help of Elorin Felter and The Mad Alagrian, Aethillian now possesses an amulet that allows him to control the switches. The device is imperfect however, and involuntary switches still occur anytime either Aethillian or Algernon take psychic damage. Additionally, a further quirk of their condition means that they are now immune to attempts to magically charm them. However, such spells always cause the pair to switch.

The Incident at Amar Creige

During the autumn of 1527, Aethillian Kindlespire visited a former adventuring associate, the Paladin of Mercannan, Father Farult Deepwater (a.k.a. Father Fathoms) at his parish in the north-eastern fishing village of Amar Creige (Ebrion). who was the current priest .   However, on arriving in Amar Creige, Kindlespire found his old friend no longer recognised him, and noted strange behaviours amongst the villagers. Suspecting foul play, he left abruptly and returned to Dolon. Despite not getting support from the sitting High Magus, Enos Modityr for a full investigation, with the support of Felter, Kindlespire was able to set up a minor investigation of his own.   Under the false identity of a Ranger named Derskil Pine, Kindlespire hired a team of adventurers known as The B-Team. The plan was to travel seprately and meet at Amar Creige to begin their investigation. However, upon returning to village, Kindlespire was attacked by the enthralled villagers in the night while he slept at the Rocky Giomach tavern. Unconcious, he was held in a makeshift cell within the cliffside tunnels of the Cackling Caves.   On the 29th of Havermath, using the villager's attack on the B-Team as a distraction, Kindlespire was able to defeat his captors and rejoined the adventurers as they explored the cave network. Suspecting the influence of mind flayers, Kindlespire split from the group once more to return to the surface so that he might create a teleportation circle for his allies in Mysticalia to bring support.   Following the steps of the B-Team, Kindlespire would once again venture into the heart of the Cackling Caves, arriving in time to observe his allies locked in mortal combat with a Ulitharid, mid-ascencion to Elder Brain. Jumping in to the fray, Kindlespire attempted to cast Feeblemind upon the Ulitharid but suffered a psychic backlash that ultimately broke his mind, creating his alter-ego Algernon Kinkyspank.   Ultimately the B-Team were successful in defeating the Illithid threat in Amar Creige, although the event was hushed up due to the tragic loss of the entire village. In the aftermath, Kindlespire would be MIA for several months, until Elorin Felter retrieved a hungover Algernon from a party town in The Spice Islands.   Returning to work, Kindlespire would personally oversee the wrap-up investigations of Amar Creige and the many strange and wonderful artifacts found in the Illithid lair. It was during this period that he struck up a correspondence with Badul Zhaldrea, exchanging artifact samples for information.

The Thanes of Order

Following the events of Amar Creige and his subsequent issues with Algernon, Kindlespire's reputation was severely diminished. However, his old friend Elorin Felter ensured that work was available, especially once Felter replaced Modityr as High Magus.   In 1534 Felter entered into an agreement with Algernon, exchanging 2 weeks' (supervised) holiday if Algernon would travel to Belegond, in order to allow Aethillian to make contact with Felter's contact there. During this mission, while part of a prison caravan heading north, Aethillian/Algernon met and briefly joined forces with the Thanes of Order helping them proceed on their quest northwards before parting ways again.

The Darkest Timeline

During the events of the Darkest Timeline, Aethillian never met the Thanes in the north and was instead sent to intercept them at Weslannin after the fall of the Storm Wall. He later joined the Thanes of Order full time during their adventures in Milagon and for a short time acted as their de facto leader when the hunt for the elemental rings was unsuccessful.   As the events of the Darkest Timeline unravelled, Aethillian, spurred on by Shin's strange prophecies, realised that Algernon and other insane individuals were reacting strangely to events in the world. Eventually Algernon's dislike for the Darkest Timeline led to him ceding control of their shared body over to Aethillian entirely. As a result, Aethillian became convinced that the version of reality he was experiencing was in some way incorrect. Following the death of Elorin Felter at the assasination of the Frithgard, Kindlespire became obsessed with the subject and threw his efforts into correcting the timeline.   Thanks to Aethillian and Shin's calculations, the Thanes of Order were able to intercept Gamble when she entered the Darkest Timeline, before the forces of the Obliviati could reach her.   After hearing Gamble's tale, Aethillian was able to determine that her relationship with Umberlee was at the heart of the Darkest Timeline and arranged for the Thanes to teleport to Barada with instructions for them to seek out the Mad Alagrian, Badul Zhaldrea.   Unfortunately, Aethillian was unable to travel with the Thanes, and was subsequently captured, tortued and killed by the Slaad, Ygorl who had possessed the body of Salenis Vendari.
