Barada

On arriving at Barada, first-time visitors may see only the ruins of the ancient city of Bel, a city from before the division of Akhret between Upper and Lower Kingdoms. But Barada's beating heart lies under the surface of the harsh desert. There, an entire city of people live their busy lives amongst a vast network of tunnels, buildings and caves; all made possible by magical marvels.

Demographics

As the capital city of Alagria, Barada is a cultural melting pot, which people from many species call home.  Based on the most recent census, the population of Barada breaks down roughly as follows:
% of Pop. Species
c. 16% Human
c. 8% Dragonborn (incl. Half Dragons)
c. 6% Duergar, Drow, Rock Gnomes, Deep Gnomes
c. 5% Halflings, Dwarves
c. 4% Half-Elves, Half-Orcs, Tabaxi (nomad clans), Lizardfolk (nomad clans)
c. 3% Air Genasi, Earth Genasi, Fire Genasi, Sun Elf
c. 2% Aasimar
c. 1% Water Genasi, Wood Elves, Forest Gnomes

Government

The Great Shovrhan of Alagria, is the ultimate ruler of both the city and the wider country. The Shovrhanate is a dynastic line of Half Dragons that represent the pinnacle of authority within Alagria.   Supporting the Shovrhan in matters of national and cultural importance is the Council of 3 Disciplines, which is formed from the leaders of The Obfuscati, the Qalea Militaria and Hw. Habn'Izm University.   Supporting the Shovrhan in matters of local government is the Council of 10 Guilds, which is formed from the Masters of each of the city's official guilds.   While the Councils operate independently of each other, on occasion a Guild Master may be invited to a session of the Council of 3 Disciplines, if their expertise and knowledge is required. Additionally, the Councils may come together to vote on matters of serious import, such as the election of a "Shovrhan Aismianam" (regent, Shovrhan in Name Only).

Defences

Barada does not maintain defences in the same way as a normal city. Instead the city's mages use one of the secret magics of Alagria to abjure the tunnels and caves of the Barada, preventing any force from disturbing or passing through the earthen walls. These defences are crucial to preventing an attack from below (or the passing nuisances of Xorns or Purple Worms). In addition to these magical defences, the city has many more conventional, underground checkpoints of metal and stone.
While the city has not seen a siege in many centuries, should an attack come, these checkpoints partition the city; forcing an invading army down a series of choke points where enemy soldiers would be subjected to deadly barrages both magical and mundane.
