Summary

  • The party headed to Sandreach to confront the Chief of Feathers, leader of the Order of the Emerald Feather. It took a few days to arrive.
  • In the southwest corner of the beach, they discovered a tide-worn cave. They entered, and found Order agents guarding. The PCs ambushed and defeated them.
  • A voice telepathically taunted the party as they worked their way through the cave, fighting stone golems and spies.
  • They found a large elliptical meeting chamber, and a makeshift kitchen with a natural chimney.
  • They approached a crystal ball embedded into the wall, but refused to look into it when goaded by the voice.
  • They found a secret room with an ancient journal.
  • They approached the Chief's lair, finding a door operated by a lever. Another embedded crystal ball revealed a room in another tunnel somewhere, with two assassins. They pulled the lever to open the door to the boss, but the door opened extremely slowly, its mechanism rumbling unseen.
  • The Chief's voice forced the party to make a choice: the assassins (with invisible stalkers) would travel to Salmund immediately to assassinate Sheriff Karock. The party could rush back to the village to warn him, allowing the Chief to escape, or they could left the sheriff die and confront the Chief. The voice informed them that the door would take 4 hours to open, making a big difference in their travel time.
  • Grey sent Yog to warn the sheriff. The invisible stalkers used their tracking abilities to stop to the strategy, killing the crow.
  • The party decided to remain, realizing they could use the sending stones that Karock and the Chief each held to warn the sheriff.
  • When the door opened, the party found the chief, a mustached human man in a fancy suit with a gilded staff topped by a spiny green crystal. The party fought him and his bodyguards, and won with tactical use of hunger of hadar and silence.
  • As the Chief died, his brain popped out of his head, and began to flee, digging into a crevice under his bed!
  • The party were barely able to kill the four-legged brain before it escaped. They recognized that this creature had a connection to illithids.
  • Alystin collected a paw print from the brain onto a piece of parchment.
  • When Grey touched the Staff of the Emerald Feather, time froze and he was transported to a green glass bubble deep underwater somewhere. A huge green eye appeared in the abyss: it was the Voice of the Deep, his warlock patron! It queried Grey about his life and past, and stated that its goal was to study humanoidkind. Grey furiously shouted at the Voice, telling how its "offer" had ruined his life. The Voice told him to find the Orbs of Power. After a heated conversation, Grey was transported back to the hideout, where others were not aware the vision happened.
  • Alystin pulled a giant goat out of a bag of tricks that the party found.
  • Callisto used one of the sending stones to send a message to Karock, warning him of the invisible assassins. The Sheriff prepared for such an attack, and survived thanks to the idea.
  • The party returned to Salmund. Karock thanked them for their efforts and awarded them each a house, as well as a sum of gold.
