Session 5/27 Report in Arus | World Anvil

Session 5/27

General Summary

The party is in the last stretch of their mission to deliver Larry Luckfoot. As they left the border of Woodstock and returned back home to the Kingdom of Aprya the sky grew dark with storm clouds. After traveling a few hours through the woods, Sylver turned in his seat quickly looking at a thread that made his blood run cold. A thread so faint in color and substance that it seemed like it didn't/shouldn't exist. Grabbing Feyrith's attention as quietly as possible, he pointed in the direction of the thread.
Feyrith made his way to one of the windows as Ballad slowed down the cart to let him get a better view. Feyrith looking through the dark woods and the rain, his Darkvision penetrating the gloom, saw a hooded figure. His Darkvision unable to see through the shadows of the hood. Telling Ballad to stop slowing down and instead to speed the fuck up. Caerso hopped into the cart with Feyrith and Larry as he heard about the danger, Feyrith watching out the back to keep an eye on the hooded figure. It wasn't very long before a tree blocked his view and when it returned the hooded figure was gone.
The cart did not slow down after the danger disappeared. Feyrith had Thoth flying above the cart to keep an eye out for the hooded figure. Although they saw no sign of the person, Thoth did see something unusual. Patches of white covered the trees like snow although it was late Summer. Feyrith guided Ballad to avoid these sections as much as possible but after a few hours that task became increasingly impossible as these patches grew larger and larger. It was soon apparent that these patches were not patches of snow but thick coating of webs over the trees. Caerso getting increasingly uncomfortable as he wasn't the biggest fan of spiders.
A noise started to rise above the sound of the rain. A clicking and chittering could be heard as the trees began to move. A loud crashing sound had forced Ballad to bring the cart to a stop as creatures began to stalk out of the trees into their view. Large spiders crawled out of the woods as a tree fell to the ground and a huge spider charged through the trees that couldn't hold it back. Guarded by two seeming guards with what looked like swords for front legs.
The party jumped into action as Feyrith, thinking quickly, cast one of his new spells, Hypnotic Pattern, on the queen and her guards. Both the queen and one of her guards failed their save as well as a spare spider that was standing nearby and stood still. Making the battle easier, the party began clearing out the remaining spiders. The remaining queens guard, dealing serious damage to the group. While the fight went on increasingly louder booms echoed through the rainy woods. As most of the spiders were finally cleared, a massive foot came from the sky and stomped the massive abdomen of the Queen killing it.
Larry shouted up the leg with a smile as a head leaned down out of the clouds. A massive shadow behind the giant came into view as a massive blue dire Bull followed its owner. Larry introduced the Storm Giant as Paul. To help the group remain safe through the rest of the passage, Paul picked up the cart and horse/dog and placed them on the back of the bull. As they made their way to the giants home, Paul began to explain a bit of what had been happening in Aprya while the party was in Woodstock.
A notice had gone out that a monster surge had been enacted in this forest. Monster surges aren't common events that happen but usually are a cause of a lot of deaths when they do. These woods were the front lines of the current monster surge and Amberhold was leading the front in dismantling it. There was speculation that the Kingdom of Shadowsilk had started this surge as a declaration of war against Aprya but there was not enough evidence to prove this to be true. Currently the Kingdoms focus was on finding the source of the surge and was employing a countless number of Guild members to Amberhold to deal with the problem. If the surge passed through the forest it would attack nearby villages that were defenseless against the stronger monsters like the ones they fought today. As they reached his cabin, Paul invited the party in to rest from the storm before they were going to continue their way towards Amberhold.
