The Final Burning
When the alien beings known as the Ash Gods came to Earth, the planet was scorched in the blaze of their firestorms in the span of a single day. In that time, virtually all life was wiped out, clearing the planet for the occupation by this mysterious, genocidal alien force. In the aftermath of their fires, and the subsequent ecological and environmental destruction that followed, the planet was remade into the hellish world of Ashrain. Despite this devastation, many human survivors claim that the fires of the Ash Gods were a cleansing agent, wiping the planet of corruption, pollution, and natural mistakes, and thereby making it fit for a new and better tomorrow. Such believers, usually associated with the religious extremist movement known as the Ash Zealots, point to the mass extinctions of the past, which have always been followed by huge explosions of ecological diversity, and culminated in the evolution of the human race itself. According to these believers, the planet is due for a Final Burning by the Ash Gods before it is over, a final burning that will complete the cleansing of the planet in preparation for the seeding of a new paradise. These believers claim that the incomprehensible text of the Saashein Tablet details the Final Burning and its consequences. Dogma dictates that it can neither be interpreted or prophesied, and translations of the tablet are considered heretical and misleading. Humanity must simply await the Final Burning with all due reverence and humility, prepared to go to our extinction to make way for the new world, or to be saved by the grace of the Ash Gods to be remade as a new humanity that will dwell among the coming paradise.
