A Tale of Two Cities
General Summary
The party explained the details of Prior Confessio's plot to Percival, although keeping their own involvement in the margrave's death a secret. Percival suggested that in order to flush the Prior out and obtain evidence, the party allow themselves to be arrested while he made sure that someone trustworthy led the investigation. That way, they could be sure that the information made its way to the proper authorities. However, the party did not wish to get further involved in the political system and decided instead to leave town and head towards the Klenhelm capital city of Einstap. Disappointed in the party's unwillingness to help, Percival left to handle the situation himself. As the party made their way towards the Roselawn docks they noticed that several guards were keeping a close eye on them, but were able to arrive at the wharf unaccosted. Being presented with two choices of travel, the party decided to split up with Lethe taking the more expensive and faster ship while Precision and Erevan boarded the slower but cheaper ship. Lethe, predicted to arrive in Einstap two days before the others, said he would wait for the party while using the downtime to pursue the process of cutting and enchanting the arcaltium crystals he obtained from Drogath Goldworthy. After a three-day sail aboard the small ship Wave Cutter, Lethe arrived in the grey, smoky, industrial city of Einstap. Upon hearing from the Wave Cutter's captain that elves were quite unwelcome in the city, Lethe used his smuggler's ring to appear human and disembarked at the wharf district. As he walked through the city he passed a large guarded area surrounded by barbed-wire fencing; upon closer inspection he realized this area appeared to be a ghetto where elves were forced to reside. Many of these elves had a moth-shaped brand on their left cheek. As Lethe went further into the city he emerged into an upscale residential neighborhood, eventually approaching the gated manor of famed jewelsmith Kara Diamonti. After unsuccessfully attempting to negotiate passage with two Dhozaren guards at the gate, he headed towards the Diamonti jewel store. Inside he was privy to an argument between the desk clerk and a well-dressed elf who also bore a moth brand on his cheek. The elf seemed very upset with the craftsmanship of a commissioned item and after demanding that it be remade left the store. Lethe approached the flustered clerk and asked about the arcaltium, but was told he would have to ask Kara herself the next day. He then left and rented a room at Madoc's Dragon, an upscale inn. Meanwhile, Precision and Erevan made a stop in the city of Kassleg three days into their sail. While Erevan picked up some light armor with the intent of training in it, Precision sought out the Tracery at the High Ride Casino. Finding out that her contact Ilaria was not presently in the city, she set out to track down the loan shark Irnthi Valorum, hoping to clear her father's debt personally. The loan shark was initially unwilling to forgive the debt, and after Precision responded with violence he ran out the back while his mercenary guards covered his escape. Precision pushed past them and chased him through the streets, before he was stopped by the timely arrival of Erevan. After hauling him back to his place of business Precision engaged in aggressive negotiations with Irnthi, eventually persuading him to forgive a large portion of Harold's debt and extending the timetable, in exchange for holding Precision and Erevan personally responsible for the debt. The two were given six weeks to come up with 4,000GP or else a hit would be put out on them and Harold. While initially acceptive of the deal the situation went south when Precision, seeing an opportunity to destroy Irnthi's records, persuaded Erevan to burn the loan shark's ledger. This triggered another fight with the mercenaries which was broken up by the arrival of the Spadatore. Precision, Erevan, and the surviving mercenaries were all clasped in irons and led away from the shop.Chapter Twenty-Four
