Birdsong Tower

In the late Fourth Age, the Birdsong Tower was a large metallic tower located to the west of the Flat Peaks Desert in Iluvitar. The Zenethian Armor remained hidden here by Sanazi until it was recovered by Brigitte, the Grayguard.   The Plane of Fire connects with the Material Plane at the Birdsong Tower.   The tower was an important landmark and functioned as a lighthouse for the nearby ships. It is also said to be the source for the heat that formed the Flat Peaks Desert. In the Fifth Age, the magma generated by the tower has greatly lessened, and the peninsula of the desert it is built upon has eroded to form the Ash Spires.

Description

The tower is located on a small hill of cooled magma. It is constructed of angular sections of blackened, burned steel, and stands around 350 feet tall. There are five angled protrusions of brighter metal jutting outwards from the central structure.   There are several ventilation shafts in the middle and upper sections of the tower, which pull air inwards and upwards, which created a whistling sound. Black soot coated the areas around these fume holes and up along the sides of the tower.   The topmost section is a rounded chamber enclosed with a black mesh fence that is open to the air. In the Fourth Age, smoke could be seen steadily leaving the top of the tower, and an intense glow could be seen from the upper chamber.

Entrance

The accessway to enter the tower was a rounded metal archway at the tower's base. The door was solid metal, and it melted away at Brigitte's touch to form a molten mass.   The interior chamber was made of cracked, broken bricks a circular room, with rust and debris littering the ground. The ceiling reached a hundred feet where great metal pipes could be seen. These pipes extended into the upper levels and shimmered with heat. On the far side of the room was a similar metal door which led to a staircase.

Central Chamber

The enclosed stairs wound upwards to reach a landing on the level above. Here, an ornate metal door prevented access further into the central structure of the tower. Two thin stream of magma poured from pipes in basins on either side of the door. The door held an immense heat capable of burning to the touch. By the late Fourth Age, parts of this door had melted and fused to the surrounding structure.   The interior of this room held a structure designed to pull magma through this room, and then expel it into the surrounding landscape. It is not known where this magma was sourced, but it is believed the tower has a connection to the Plane of Fire.   Inside were the Rage Drake eggs placed here to incubate, which would hatch into full Drakes by the late Fourth Age.

Sanazi's Temple

The staircase continued upwards to the top chamber, arriving at a landing. The floor was made of a weave of black metal over a pool of burning magma.   Evenly spaced around this chamber were four basalt towers. Each had sumbols on the face invoking the image of the hands of a clock, and there was an opening at the bottom large enough to hold the core of a Fire Elemental.   On the far side of the room was a tall golden disk. Fashioned on it from golden metal plates was the Zenethian symbol. On the bottom arm of the symbol was a small divot where Brigitte's locked could be placed. When the mechanism was activated, the arms of the symbol would spin like the arms of a clock.

History

The Fourth Age: The Age of Shadow
At some point in the early Fourth Age, Sanazi, Wielder of the Zenethian Armor, created this tower with the assistance of Rita, Wielder of the Zenethian Staff. Rage Drake eggs were placed within the tower to incubate in the intense heat of the structure.   In 4A 996, the Zenethian Heroes came to Birdsong Tower to recover the Zenethian Armor. Here, Brigitte was transported to the past where she met and battled Sanazi. Before the spell effect ended and she was returned to her time, Brigitte also took an unhatched rage drake egg.
