Firbolg

Firbolgs are a somewhat uncommon race in Azimuth. They are a tall race of forest-dwelling humanoids that are somewhat cow-like in resemblance.

Description

Appearance

They are covered in thick fur, ranging from earthy colors like brown and ruddy red, to cool grays and blues. Their faces are somewhat cow-like, having long, floppy, pointed ears and broad, pink noses.

Statistics

Firbolg are between 7 and 8 feet tall and weigh between 240 and 300 pounds.   As humanoids related to the fey, firbolg have long lifespans. A firbolg reaches adulthood around 30, and the oldest of them can live for 500 years.

History

Early history and supposed creation

The firbolg race is assumed to have been created as all were during the First Age: The Age of Creations by the gods that set forth their will during this time. If there was some greater role they were to play or a singular god that crafted them, it has been lost to time and to the Severance.

Additional History

As caretakers of the land, firbolgs prefer to remain out of sight and out of mind. They don't try to dominate nature, but rather seek to ensure that it prospers and survives according to its own laws. As such, they’ve largely spent the ages of Azimuth on the edges of history.

Society

Firbolgs love nothing more than a peaceful day spent among the trees of an old forest. Firbolg tribes cloister in remote forest strongholds, preferring to spend their days in quiet harmony with the woods. In their role as caretakers, firbolgs live off the land while striving to remain in balance with nature. Their methods reflect common sense and remarkable resourcefulness. During a bountiful summer, they store away excess nuts, fruit, and berries. When winter arrives, they scatter everything they can spare to ensure the animals of the wood survive until springtime. In a firbolg's eyes, there is no greater fault than greed. The firbolgs believe that the world remains healthiest when each creature takes only what it needs. Material goods, especially precious gems and gold, have little appeal to them. What use are such things when winter lingers and food runs short?   Firbolgs have a talent for druidic magic, and they congregate in thick forests charged with magically energies. Their cultural reverence for nature, combined with their strong and insightful minds, makes learning such magic an instinctive part of their development. Almost every firbolg learns a few spells, typically those used to mask their presence, and many go on to master nature magic.   Because they are peaceful, there are those that would seek to exploit their seemingly timid nature. Even in the face of an intrusion, firbolgs prefer a subtle, gentle approach to prevent damage to their territory. If these tactics fail, the firbolgs take more direct action. When provoked, firbolgs demonstrate formidable skills with weapons and druidic magic.   As guardians of nature, firbolgs tend to worship Gaia, The Allmother, as the source of life. Through their understanding of the cycle of life, there are firbolgs that worship Nerull, The Scythe-Bearer, as the protector of lives that have passed. Both life and death have their place in the world, and firbolgs understand how this relates to the lives of all in Azimuth.

Firbolgs in Gimora Major

The greatest populations of firbolg live in the many forests in Burland, the Kingdom of the North, primarily Dorr Wood. Their main city, Dorfaren, is hard to reach as there are no roads that reach it, only the wild trails and game paths of the woods.

Firbolgs in Gimora Minor

The proximity of the Dorr Wood to the Wild Lands brings them into conflict with the tribes that roam there and seek to exploit the bounty of their trees and meadows.

Firbolgs in Haradren Gaer Arnad

As humanoids related to the fey, firbolgs find familiarity in the culture and society of the elves. Particularly, some can be found among the Slumbering Pines of eastern Haradren Gaer Arnad, being one of the few outside races allowed to do so by the wood elves.

Firbolgs in Tarteria

Firbolgs are rare in Tarteria, and they have no settlements here. There are those that are exiled from their homes, or those who become lost or outcast. Those that make their way to Tarteria tend to be found in the places where outside cultures are more entrenched, as aspects of orcish and hobgoblin culture are opposed to that of their home.

Firbolgs in Northwest Seas

Firbolg can be found in the Northwest Seas, in Stancia, where their balance with nature and elemental magic keep them in the favor of the nearby aarakocra tribes of the Coronata Volcano.
