Goliath

Goliaths are an uncommon race on Azimuth. They are known for their incredible strength and fortitude, being naturally capable of various athletic feats and possessing an inherent ability to resist damage.

Description

Appearance

Goliath bodies look as if they are carved from mountain stone and give them great physical power. Goliath males lack hair, but females have hair along their scalp. They have grey skin, similar in color to stone. They are nearly all very powerful in build, for only the strong survive in their cultures. Many bear tattoos, scars, and other markings of importance to their tribe, reflecting their status and exploits in their life.

Statistics

Goliaths are between 7 and 8 feet tall and weigh between 280 and 340 pounds.   Goliaths have lifespans comparable to humans. They enter adulthood in their late teens and usually live less than a century.

History

Early history and supposed creation

The culture of the goliaths is one of the present; every day brings a new challenge to a goliath. As such, there is no recorded history and no origin that is known for their race. The only tales told by the few storytellers of their tribes focus on the feats of great strength and the honors of battle and combat, not a history that can do little to help those in the present, and goliaths rarely live into old age, so such histories are quickly lost.

Additional History

Despite their lack of history, they are also a people of traditions, passed from one generation to the next. These traditions are ways to prove their worth and as a way to enter adulthood, proving they are ready to aid their tribe.   Tribes have risen to prominence in regions across Azimuth and others have faded away to war, to conquest, to infighting, and to dissolution. Many regions in Azimuth have been within the ranges of goliath tribes at one point or another in their history. In the Fifth Age, the largest of these tribes are the Thundermaker Tribe and the Stoneshatter Tribe, both of which demand the attention of the surrounding cultures they inhabit due to the risk of such a tribe turning quickly into a warband.

Society

Few folk can claim to have seen a goliath, and fewer still can claim friendship with them. Goliaths wander a bleak realm of rock, wind, and cold. The largest goliath tribes are found in places other races may struggle to survive.   Food, water, and shelter are rare in the ranges their tribes roam. A single mistake can bring doom to an entire tribe, while an individual’s heroic effort can ensure the entire group’s survival. Goliaths are faced with the responsibility to earn a place in the tribe or die trying. Goliaths thus place a premium on self-sufficiency and individual skill. They have a compulsion to keep score, counting their deeds and tallying their accomplishments to compare to others. Goliaths love to win, but they see defeat as a prod to improve their skills. This dedication to competition has a dark side. Goliaths are ferocious competitors, but above all else they are driven to outdo their past efforts.   For goliaths, competition exists only when it is supported by a level playing field. Competition measures talent, dedication, and effort. Those factors determine survival in their home territory, not reliance on magic items, money, or other elements that can tip the balance one way or the other. Goliaths happily rely on such benefits, but they are careful to remember that such an advantage can always be lost. A goliath who relies too much on them can grow complacent, a recipe for disaster in the mountains.   Goliaths that feel the pull of faith do so in the heat of battle and in the fury of the places they live. Goliaths love competition and combat, and so they worship Barduumus, The Battlelord, as the God of Strength. For those who respect the challenge of the world and the strength of storm and sea worship Sehakora, The Maelstrom, the Goddess of the Seas.   Among goliaths, any adult who can’t contribute to the tribe is expelled. A lone goliath has little chance of survival, especially an older or weaker one. Goliaths have little pity for adults who can’t take care of themselves, though a sick or injured individual is treated, as a result of the goliath concept of fair play.   Goliaths that leave their tribe are usually either exiles or abandoners. The tribe does not stop for the weak and does not stand for cheaters. For others, the goliath drive to outdo themselves can drive them to wandering, searching for greater and greater challenges. And for some, their sense of fair play can drive some to hunt for revenge or justice.

Goliaths in Gimora Minor

In the Wild Lands, the Thundermaker Tribe competes with the beast and human tribes of this largely untamed place.

Goliaths in Tarteria

The goliaths of the Stoneshatter Tribe roam freely in the foothills to the north of the Fire Spire Sands. They hunt the creatures and monsters of the deserts and sands to survive. However, expansion by the orcs is now bringing them to conflict with the desert goliaths who rely on these lands as well.
