Shadar-Kai

Current Month: Julwar 2nd: 209, The Fifth Age
The Shadar-Kai, or "They Shadow people", are a dying shadow touched race of Elves.   Their home world Shadar-nir, or "The Shadow Planet", "The Shadow Plane", or more commonly known as the Shadowfell, was assaulted by the Sundered many hundreds of years ago, causing the survivors so scatter across the cosmos.    Characteristics   Shadar-Kai resemble ash-skinned Elves, in a perpetual state between life and death, while others were human-like in appearance. They are usually slender and range from slightly taller to slightly shorter than humans, exhibiting graceful movements well suited to stealth.   They have dusky gray skin and colorless complexions that varied from alabaster to dark gray; black hair, with few shadar-kai having pale hair, that range within human hair colors; and dark eyes lacking any sclera or clear pupil. Shadows on their bodies or clothing always seem to be deeper and darker than shadows elsewhere, and their shadows seem to follow them and reach out, especially when they are angry.   They are easily lost from view. Many Shadar-kai display all kinds of iron body piercings in nose, ears, eyebrows, shoulders, and other parts of the body, and purple-inked tattoos on body, limbs, and face.   Despite having a somewhat youthful appearance off world, beings from Shadar-nir evolved to resist its volcanic atmosphere. While on their homeworld they appear visibly aged and withered, with swollen joints that gave them an overall corpse-like aspect. For that reason, many shadar-kai wore masks to conceal their decrepit state while on the Shadar-nir.   Shadar-kai breed true. Their pairings produces Shadar-kai offspring, as well as the pairing between a human and a Shadar-kai.   Personality   Due to their prolonged exposure to the Shdar-nir, Shadar-kai are nearly devoid of emotion. They are known to be bitter, grim-natured, troubled, and driven, with souls touched by Sundered influences. They were often seen as cold and pitiless to outsiders.   Shadar-kai have very little regard for their own lives. Often viewing a present incarnation as but one in an endless cycle and death as foretold and impossible to change, they have grown jaded and careless with their bodies. Their affinity with the Shadowfell defines them as a people and influences every aspect of their culture.   Shadar-kai embrace living to the limits of pleasure, while striving for personal greatness, so that when they fall, stories of their great deeds would grant them a sort of immortality. In their search for personal glory, most Shadar-kai ignore comfort, morality, and safety, traits they consider banalities.   Shadar-kai prefer to attack from ambush and steal without being seen.   History   Like all Elves, the Shadar-kai originated on the Elven homeworld Anon-Suramur. They fled with the rest of the fey race when the Sundered came and conquered their planet, boarding giant Darkships called Craftworlds that sailed into the void between stars to look for new homewards.   Eventually, the ancestors of the Shadar-kai settled on a volcanic planet who's sky was blackened by ash, calling this place Shadar-nir, or the Shadowfell. After thousands of years, the evolved into a distinct elven race different from their cousins.   Eventually, the Sundered came for Shadar-nir as well, and the Shadar-kai fought a long a bloody war against the ruinous creatures. With no help from the other craftworlds, they slowly lost ground, until only a few fortress cities remained.   Many of these cities began to evacuate their populations, but due to the strange nature of magic on Shadar-nir, the portals sent the refugees to far and unknown places in the cosmos.   While some shader-kai may still yet live on the homeworld, the homeless evacuees must find a place for themselves in this strange new cosmos. Some still hope to rescue those left being, and search for ways to return to Shadar-nir.   Notable Shadar-Kai   The Twin-Souled Iva Inhavala
