Magic Using Classes
CONTENT SUBJECT TO CHNAGE WITHOUT NOTICE
The "rules" for Character Creation for Magic Using classes is mostly for flavor/background based upon Chronala's history and certain territorial attitudes toward Arcane Magic.
There are two primary schools of Magic in the world of Chronala, The Citadel (which is also home to the College of Bards) and Strixhaven.
Characters of the classes Bard, Sorcerer, or Wizard, or the sub-classes Eldritch Knight (Fighter) and Arcane Trickster (Rogue) who's backstory begins in either the Dumas Empire or Kingdom of Arcadia will have been legally obligated to attend Citadel Isle. Otherwise, their use of magic is illegal. Characters with an origin elsewhere in the world may have attended Strixhaven or practice the art of Dunamancy as taught in the Elven Krynn Dynasty.
The Dumas Empire and Kingdom of Arcadia both recognize Strixhaven graduates as have license to practice Arcane Magic. Arcanists that may have been trained within the areas of the Fey Lands may be able to be granted honorary degrees from The Citadel to be allowed to practice within the Empire and Arcadia.
Warlocks are by default illegal casters as are Wizards who choose the School of Necromancy.
Those that practice Divine Magic are of course vetted by their religions order. This includes Clerics and Paladins. Rangers and Druids are tolerated more than are Arcane casters, but questionable only because they tend to not have an organized "church".The Citadel Graduation Medallions:
- Wizard and Sorcerers = Gold
- Bards = Silver (except for College of Whisper)
- Eldritch Knights = Steel
- Whisper Bards and Arcane Tricksters = Obsidian

- *To Be Determined as the D&D Sourcebook Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos has not been released yet
- expected release date 16 November 2021
Spell Casting Classes and Archetypes Rules & Restrictions
*Campaign Starting Level = 3; The Citadel and Strixhaven graduates = level 3 - this is due to archetypes such as Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight begin at Level 3 for their respective base class
Wizards
- Vast majority of Wizards earn a Citadel or Strixhaven Degree
- Exceptions might include Necromancers, Elves/Fey races that are trained within the Fey Lands
- Anyone caught practicing Arcane Arts w/out proof of degree/license from The Citadel in certain countries/areas could be arrested, fined, or worse.
- Wizard Hunter
- Homebrew class taken from Xanathar's Lost Notes to Everything Else found online at the Dungeon Masters Guild.
- Exclusively trained by The Citadel
- These Wizards are largely responsible for locating the magically gifted so they can be properly trained at The Citadel, but also serve as enforcers, hunting down and arresting those that practice arcane magic illegally within the Empire and Arcadia
- Non-Citadel Wizards, e.g, trained in the Fey Lands may be given special dispensation
- Dunamancy (Chronurgy Magic and Graviturgy Magic) falls outside of the purview of either The Citadel or Strixhaven as it is taught exclusively within the Elven territory known as the Kryn Dynasty
- Bladesinger - Elves and Half-Elves exclusively and only taught within Fey Lands, except the Kryn Dynansty
- Bladesingers are elves who bravely defend their people and lands. They are elf wizards who master a school of sword fighting grounded in a tradition of arcane magic. In combat, a bladesinger uses a series of intricate, elegant maneuvers that fend off harm and allow the bladesinger to channel magic into devastating attacks and a cunning defense. - Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide
Sorcerers - Also mostly trained at The Citadel's School of Sorcery
- Not academic magic, but taught control of innate Arcane abilities
- Sorcerers not trained at The Citadel or Strixhaven are always Aberrant Mind, Shadow Magic, or Wild Magic Sorcerers (*Shadow Magic is treated with the same distain as the School of Necromancy and Aberrant Mind is more Psionic that Magic. Wild Magic is self-explanatory - little/no training = little/no control)
Bards- College of Bards
- All Colleges presented in Official sourcebooks
Warlocks- The very nature of how a Warlock gains their power prevents acceptance by either The Citadel or Strixhaven
- Warlocks are outlaws in the Dumas Empire and Kingdom of Arcadia
Eldritch Knights, Arcane Archers, and Echo Knights (Fighter Archetypes)- The Citadel Trained
- Associated with the Bard College of Swords
- Echo Knights, being an offshoot of Dunamancy fall outside of the purview of either The Citadel or Strixhaven as it is taught exclusively within the Elven territory known as the Kryn Dynasty
Arcane Tricksters (Rogue Archetype)- Part of the College of Bards of College of Whispers.
- Can be non-Citadel/non-Strixhaven trained since they are a Rogue sub-class, but then would not have the protection of The Citadel or Strixhaven
Clerics, Druids, Paladins, and Rangers- Not really considered "Magic" in the conventional sense as it is granted by the Devine
- *Druids and Rangers tend to be viewed suspiciously since they are not members of a centralized Church as are Clerics and Paladins, who's Orders will vouch for them or provide writs/markers similar to the ones the Citadel and Strixhhaven gives their graduates.
