The Citadel

Where all Wizards, Sorcerers, and Bards from the Dumas Empire and the Kingdom of Arcadia are legally trained in magical arts.   Additionally, those seeking training in the arts of Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster also find their way to The Citadel.   Divine Magic while respected is not taught at the school as those wielding such are typically instructed by their respective religious order.   ~

Council of Maesters

*Note that the Schools of Magic listed in the Player's Handbook and other official D&D materials are listed above except for Necromancy, Bladesining, and Dunamancy. Necromancy is not taught at The Citadel and is outlawed within the Dumas Empire and Kingdom of Arcadia thus making it the most likely school of study for illegal wizards. Bladesiging is only taught by Elf Wizards and Dunamancy is exclusively taught within the Kryn Dynasty.

Warlocks are likewise not Citadel trained due to the nature of how they achieve their Arcane skills.

Sorcerers born in the Dumas Empire or Kingdom of Arcadia that break the law and do not attend The Citadel or Strixhaven are always Wild Magic Sorcerers.

Clerics, Paladins, Rangers, and Druids are outside the purview of The Citadel being practitioners of Divine (not Arcane) Magics. Clerics and Paladins are of course governed by their respective churches, while Rangers and Druids have are more dubious and less trusted stigma being uses of "Devine Magic" but not belonging to a church or other recognized religious order per se.

Assets

Academics - The Citadel boasts the largest libraries in the world, not only in the Arcane but also for History, Art, Music, Religion, and Literature. It is not unheard of for even non-gifted students to attend a few semesters a The Citadel for academic endeavors other than the Arcane.

Magic Items - Being a school of Magic, The Citadel also produces (and subsequently sells) various magical items and potions. Items that have been enchanted and potions produced by The Citadel and its graduates are typically considered the finest quality and tend to fetch a higher price than those created elsewhere.

History

Magic, when wielded by a novice, can be quite dangerous. For centuries people feared young mages as their lack of control could (and often did) result in the destruction of whole villages or farms. But finding a Maester Wizard who was willing to take on an apprentice was both difficult and expensive.   Founded in 500 CE via a Royal Decree issued by [insert historical ruler here], The Citadel's Charter is to instruct those with the gift of magic. While anyone from the world of Chronala may apply to study at the Citadel, citizens of The Kingdom of Arcadia and the Dumas Empire are required by law to send their gifted to island.   In 550 CE, it was determined that the Arcane Arts could also be artfully wielded through music and lyric and thus the College of Bards was founded allowing those with not only Arcane ability but talents such as music, rhyme, and the performing arts, to perfect their craft creatively.   ~

Military

Though a sovereign entity The Citadel has no standing "army" per se but does maintain a cadre of guards all of which are either Eldritch Knight Fighters or College of Swords Bards and therefore graduates of The Citadel or College of Bards.

The Citadel Guard is currently commnaded by Commander Rish Korgax (Female, Half-Orc, Eldritch Knight Fighter 10)

Education

Graduates of The Citadel and College of Bards receive a medallion that identifies them as having graduated and thus allowing them to legally practice Arcane Arts within those areas where it would otherwise be illegal.

Graduation Medallions: (granted at a minimum of Level 3)

  • Wizard and Sorcerers = Gold
  • Bards = Silver (except for College of Whisper)
  • Eldritch Knights and Arcane Archers = Steel
  • Whisper Bards and Arcane Tricksters = Obsidian

Special Dispensation for Non-Citadel Trained Wizards, Sorcerers, and Bards

  • While The Citadel hosts and trains arcane magic users from all of the world of Chronala, only the Dumas Empire and Kingdom of Arcadia have laws enforcing those found to have "the spark" to be required to attend the school.
  • The Fey Lands and Kryn Dynasty , as one might expect train elves and others in the magical arts. For this reason, members of non-human races that present a letter to The Citadel from their master may be presented with an honorary degree and special medallion demonstrating such so that they can legally practice their craft in The Empire and Arcadia.
  • There may also be times that an apprentice of a Citadel graduate has accompanied their master on a journey rather than having directly attended the school. These students are also allowed to present letters of recommendation from their masters.
