Commander Van Hawk (a.k.a. The Doomknight)
The villain to surpass all villains - that was Van Hawk. Our beloved commander. He styled himself the biggest villain of all - larger than life, heartless, cruel; if it was 'evil', you bet he had done it and formed an opinion on it. Evil, villainy - it was a lifestyle to him. A standard that he held all other villains and evildoers to - he delighted in it, almost. Sometimes more than crushing the forces of 'good' - delighted in their terror, their fear, their hopelessness when their own heartless actions brought them face to face with him - true evil. He relished the hope dying in their eyes as they realized how utterly naive they had been, and their panicked pleas when they realized that they were going to die - that all their bullying and evildoing had brought them here; to an unavoidable end.
Funny thing, though. Despite the heartlessness, the cruelty, the savagery - he was the best commander i'd ever had. He was...magnetic, I guess. He made you feel powerful. Special. No matter how big the legions got, he remembered your name - the name of your family, your friends, your worries and fears, everything - sometimes even help you work through them. We all would have died for him - and lots of us did.
He inspired loyalty like no one else could. Our hearts and souls are his, from now until the end of time. — Legate Torghul Whitebone, Lieutenant of the Infinite Horde
Physical Description
A towering, beastly monolith of a man, Van Hawk is a looming undead that towers over the likes of humans, elves, and humanoids of all kinds...though his body is mostly skeletal beneath his layers of thick demonic iron plate armor and seems to be almost a part of him, his armor and body both burn with a freezing flame and give of such an unholy aura that even the most saintly of beings feel nothing but abandonment and loss near him...as if the gods and life itself has abandoned them. He is incapable of getting sick, and cannot get tired or out of shape.
His body is massive and looming, burning with unholy freezing flame and filled with an unholy aura that drains the color, life, vibrancy, and hope from all near him. Though he is believed to be utterly skeletal, he is never seen outside of his countless layers of armor or without his helmet, so such things are little more than speculation.
His face has never been beheld by any creature who has lived to tell the tale - his fearsome helmet almost never leaves his head, so his face, while believed to be utterly skeletal with no flesh to speak of, is mere speculation.
Van Hawk, so legendary as to be one of the most infamous creatures on the entire planet of Ea, is himself a walking identifying feature - his enormous body, his fearsome blackened plate armor that seems to almost have been grown around his body in countless demonic layers of steel, the unholy aura that radiates outwards from him at all times which is potent enough to sap the color and life from the surrounding area, and his utterly terrifying demeanor and presence which is tangible enough to cause full-body paralysis to those who behold him.
Rather easier a task, then, to imagine things that aren't identifying features.
Most obviously, Van Hawk's most unique physical quirk is his nature as an undead and the armor which uncompasses him - which almost seems to have "grown" around his bones and locked itself around him in a way that makes it impossible to remove rather than appearing to be any normally forged suit of armor.
Otherwise, his fairly unnatural height is a physical quirk for which there is little justification.
As the one and only Doomknight, he emanates an Unholy Aura within which even the most saintly of beings feel nothing but abandonment and loss near him...as if the gods and life itself has abandoned them. Within this aura undead are not only stronger, smarter and faster, but burn with the same unholy coldflame that he does. In addition, his entire body and his armaments burn with an unholy coldflame that both rots and freezes, and above all, his mastery over Undead is the stuff of legend...not just within his unholy aura, but all Undead that fall within his sight and hear his voice have no choice but to obey him no matter if they are sentient or otherwise.
Additionally, he is most feared for his ability to summon undead from practically nothingness...similar to how
Barkhan the Eternal can raise the dead with no corpse, Van Hawk is much the same...but on a much larger scale. He can summon entire armies of mindless undead from nothing but shadow, bringing thousands of dead to his command with each summon...and with his mastery over shadow, he can cloak entire countrysides and cities into eternal night...and often does so to mask his attacks. And finally, his merest touch can corrupt the most bright and noble of souls, and can raise undead from corpses and living creatures alike in mere seconds.
Whatever other horrific and evil powers he wields as a Doomknight are unknown, but as the power and nature of a Doomknight is believed to be an evolved form of the powers of a Graveknight, he likely has the incredible ability to rejuvenate himself after death.
Undying symbol of his power, Van Hawk is never seen without his thick, layered, demonic suit of plate armor known far and wide as an artifact of legendary power known as the "The Doomplate", said to store the screaming damned souls of those he slays on the field of battle for him to consume when needed to invigorate himself or empower himself. His armor, made of dozens of layers of thick interlocking and overlapping cold iron and demon-forged plate said to intertwine with his very skeleton, making him more akin to an animate armor in full battle gear than an armored man.
His helmet, as well, is a legendary sight - with a boneplate facemask on the front made from the skull of the greatest foe he ever faced, the helmet burns with an unholy freezing flame which grants him true sight at all times, such that he can see beyond all mortal and supernatural sight.
Van Hawk, as one of the wealthiest and mightiest beings on the entire Planet of Ea, possesses such a ludicrous amount of unique battle gear that it cannot possibly be listed here in any capacity - in possession of every magical item to ever exist(Or near enough), Van Hawk's specialized equipment is so vast and varied that he has an item for ever occasion and ever part of his body.
Most obvious of his unique pieces of equipment are his armor, the artifact known only as The Doomplate(Described in the "Apparel and Accessories" Section), his blade(A mysterious and rarely used weapon whose powers are largely unknown), and a fearsome set of arrows with jet-black heads that, when fired, are said to be able to replicate his own special ability to blot out the sun in a given area for a short period of time.
Mental characteristics
Much of Van Hawk's history remains unknown, though in recent memory he served as one of the founding members of
The Venau Necrocracy alongside his friend and ally
Barkhan the Eternal, having stood beside the legendary Lich-King during his unification of the snowy tundra of the north to form his kingdom, pressing his invincible undead hordes and Dullahan legions into the service of the Lich-King. He was feared far and wide as a terrifyingly skilled knight, unfathomably intelligent and cunning leader, and as an undead so powerful that he rivals
Barkhan the Eternal's mastery over Lichdom...just as his ally ascended into Lichdom then became something more, Van Hawk was once a Graveknight, an undying warrior who resurrects each time he is slain, and has long since ascended beyond such a state into something greater...and become something beyond mortal imagination:
The Doomknight.
"The Doomknight"...an unstoppable engine of undead devastation that brings unhallowed ground wherever he walks, raises undead hordes by the thousands, and can cloak entire cities in supernatural shadow...a thing so powerful and devastating that, until the advent and rise of
Barkhan the Eternal, he was widely considered the most terrifying and legendary undead in existence. He was left far alone, and only the most suicidal or the most desperate of creatures sought him and his infinite legions of Dullahan knights and undead armies for assistance or help...because for every favor or piece of assistance he gave, he exacted a terrible and devastating price to he who dared negotiate with him. Never unfair in his dealings was he, but always unfathomably cruel and twisted in its nature, and of the nature of the deals he struck...and often, those who bargained with him never realized what he would take in return for his service until it was far too late...and often, it was something they couldn't afford to lose.
However, he had a legendary reputation for having a twisted yet intact sense of honor, and even was known to stand up against tyranny on occasion...most notably when he assisted
Naomi Faedra to lead the inhuman and monstrous population of the modern day
The Inhuman Coalition into open rebellion against
The Empire of Draconia.
However, for many centuries, he had vanished from the world...some centuries after helping found
The Inhuman Coalition, Van Hawk vanished from the world without a trace, leaving his legions and dullahan knights behind in the country he helped build...some say he went on a question of his own design, others still say he went and died a final death, while others claim he was trapped by some unknown force...whatever the truth was, he had been gone for nearly one and a half to two centuries, and many pined and mourned for what they believed was the death of The Legendary Knight King Van Hawk...though others claimed he cannot be "dead", for he would simply be reborn in
The Inhuman Coalition, where he no doubt keeps his equivalent to a Liches phylactery.
In truth, it was thanks to the actions of
The Travelers that Van Hawk was discovered to not only be very much alive, but trapped within the personal planar realm of
Vecna, The Arch-Lich - on a quest to destoy the foul Lich in his personal realm though he had become ensared with the realm in the process and could not escape until
The Travelers intervened and aided him in his escape.
With his escape, Van Hawk wasted little time making a bother of himself in the lands of Corexus - and was largely responsible for the continental chaos that would in time lead to the current Age of Godsfall, as his now-infamous march of his infinite legions upon
The Empire of Draconia culminated with the disabling of
The Divine Gate and his personal, cataclysmic duel against
Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon which sundered much of the land within Draconia and sunk entire islands into the Draconian Sea, destroying the country's capital and plunging the continent into the Age of Troubles as Gods, descending to the material plane to war against each other and stop the chaos of the times, killed each other and their followers in the millions until finally, the awakening of
Atlas, The Ineffable led to the current age where their powers have been sealed and they walk the lands as mortals.
Now, Van Hawk has retreated to the frozen north and founded his personal Kingdom of Crael Adra - the first time he has founded a nation or served as a ruler in living memory, as he has given refuge and shelter to any who swear themselves to his authority.
His accomplishments and achievements are manifold and nigh-uncountable, but few remain in living memory. He is most well known in recent memory as one of the two founding members of
The Venau Necrocracy alongside his former friend and ally
Barkhan the Eternal, and even more recent as one of the founding members of
The Inhuman Coalition, who helped
Naomi Faedra rebel against Draconian oppression.
His accomplishments on the eve of the Godswar are murky and unclear, but he is known to have personally dueled
Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon at the deity's full power and, while he didn't win, managed to stand his ground and force a stalemate; a feat so impressive as to be the stuff of mythic legend. In chaos of the Godwar that followed, he is believed to have fought many gods and even slain one or two - yet more feats of unsurpassed terror to add to his legacy.
So unfathomably powerful is he, that the mere notion of failure is anathema to his very being.
Despite his cruel appearance, Van Hawk is not referred to as the "Knight King" for nothing. He has a warped but intact sense of honor, is well known to honor the letter of his word, and though he may exact somewhat twisted and cruel payments for his services, he nonetheless has never broken the letter of the deals he makes. And much like a knight, he is well-known to have a burning distate for tyrants and those who "lack an understanding of true evil"...he has risen up to crush tyrants and tyranny and oppression at incredibly irregular intervals, and most recently did so against incidents such as
Naomi Faedra's rebellion against
The Empire of Draconia, where rampant racism and bigotry led to corruption and suffering, as if the very notion of "incorrect evil" offends him.
Curiously, he will never strike a unarmed foe without a fair trial by combat, is loathe to take foes by surprise, and has never been known to refuse a challenge anyone he perceives as worthy or as an equal, nor has he been known to turn his back on a foe no matter the situation. He affords the same lethal respect to each of his foes, though not all are worthy to earn his notice, rememberance or true respect as equals. Even more curiously, he enforces this same discipline on his legions of Dullahan Knights...and while he has no qualms of those who die to his infinite hordes of mindless undead warriors, he does hold all his intelligent knights to this same exacting standard.
Finally, despite his cruelty, he accepts any who wish to join his "kingdom" and his army, so long as they swear fealty to him as knights and promise to carry out his will and protect his holdings as their own. He will even go out of his way to defend those sworn to his service, and so long as they do not betray him, he can be a stalwart defender and even a hero to his subjects...though once betrayed, he often stops at nothing to bring any who spit in the face of their loyalty to a painful and torturous death.
In these ways his Knightly nature can sometimes shine through, but is often overshadowed by his infinite cruelty and bottomless capacity for evil that means, so long as his word is obeyed and such personal codes are not broken, he often has no qualms doing truly anything to achieve his ineffable goals.
Whether he acts thusly truly out of goodwill, personal offense, or some other ineffable but evil motive is unknown, as he has also on multiple occasions helped commit such acts of tyranny or even ignored other tyrants or oppressors. The only common thread is his distate for those he considers "Fake", "Insignificant", "Worthless", or "Pretend", such as the draconian nobility and king who languished on their thrones, consumed by decadence, as their racism and bigotry consumed them to brutalize the inhumans and monsters of the time.
Breaking his word or his code or "suffering the existence of false villains and two-bit tyrants" are both similarly taboo to him.
Personality Characteristics
Though his motivations have long been the subject of countless scholars and even many of his own allies and friends, Van Hawk's motivations are known to him and him alone - at least, in the long term, as such questions as "Why does he yet endure?" and "Why does he persist in undeath" are subjects of hot debate, yet his shorter-term motivations are fairly well known.
As a being who delights in evil and who styles himself as a "Villain of Villains", Van Hawk's greatest motivations aside from whatever merest whims he finds himself motivated to accomplish are the destruction and humiliation of any being he deems as being "terrible villains" or those whose evil actions bring shame upon all evildoers everywhere. When faced with such creatures, he is motivated rather rapidly to kill and/or humiliate them himself to the exclusion of all else.
Talented Commander, Warrior, Tactician, Leader, Scholar, Philosopher, and excellent at both reading other creatures as well as discerning their true intentions and history and motivations. He is an excellent skilled purveyor of pain and suffering, and often knows exactly how to push others and where and how to hurt them to inflict maximum pain or suffering. He is also an excellent painter and appraiser of art of all kinds. Due to eons of constant warfare is an utter menace upon the battlefield - a tactician beyond compare whose moves and strategems are nearly impossible to defend against, while his own personal power means that only the mightiest and most legendary of heroes can hope to stand against him.
Utterly Inept at forgiving sleights against his Ego or his person. Once he has been offended, he is nearly incapable of forgiving such an offense until the 'debt' has been repaid or the offender has been punished and/or killed appropriately. Perhaps obviously as well, he is utterly incapable of showing mercy or forgiveness - it is a concept foreign to him beyond the 'mercy' of a quick death, and he is fairly infamous for his brutal campaigns of war which leave few survivors. While forgiveness is not as impossible a task for him, due to his towering Ego it is a difficult thing to get from him depending on the scale of the offense in question.
Likes: True Evil, True Villains, Those who obey a code or a liege, His subordinates and followers, The Strong, Fighting with an equal, Crushing False Evil and Fake Villains, Collecting more wealth and power, Crushing the unworthy and the weak, Fine Art, History, Ancient Relics and Artifacts, Objects of fine Craftsmanship, Bravery(Even foolish bravery), ???
Dislikes: "False" Evil or "Pretend" Villains, Those who beg for mercy, Those who would throw away their ideals if it meant survival, Those who break their code or betray their liege, Those who fail to honor a debt, Mercy, Forgiveness, Those who have others fight their battles for them,
Barkhan the Eternal, Surprise Attacks, Creatures with inflated views of themselves, Denying a worthy opponent a proper death, Denying the worthy a chance to be remembered, ???
He has an intact yet twisted sense of honor, and has never been known to go back on his word. Has an odd respect for those he sees as worthy foes, and makes an effort to give them a fair final combat and death by his hand where possible, as well as remembering them. Though he is a ruthless butcher who will kill anyone and crush anything that stands in his way, he considers it very important to uphold his code as well as to protect those who swear themselves to his command - and as such one of his greatest virtues is the care and attention he gives to his own subordinates; remembering their names and addressing them as such, remembering their families and their worries, working to aid those who serve under him and help them overcome issues in their life...all this and more forms the backbone of Van Hawk's greatest virtue:
An unshakeable desire to protect and care for those in his charge.
He delights in twisting and tormenting the deals he makes with others who come to seek him out, though he never breaks the word he gives, he is well-known to exact a terrible price on those who make bargains with him. He is terribly merciless and though he has honor, it has been warped and twisted over his milennia of unlife and those who rely on his "Knightly" behavior often find themselves taken aback by his wanton brutality, cruelty, and disregard for morality or goodness. He delights in evil and villainy, and considers himself the "One, true master of evil", and a villain completely above all others...and to that end, he will never hesitate to commit any crime, any act, or anything no matter how cruel or vile it is...and often, delights in surprising those who think he won't do them.
Perhaps his greatest flaw of all, Van Hawk has a towering Ego that makes him legendary difficult to deal with - an avaricious, greedy, lustful man with an Ego that brooks no insult nor quarter, he believes without a doubt that all the worlds treasures are destined to end up in his vaults. He delights in taking valuables of all kinds from those he believes are not worthy of them, and cannot bring himself to deny a challenge against his Ego when one is levelled against him - making him somewhat easy to bring to the battlefield so long as one issues a personal challenge against him, though his own immense power makes such challenges a foolhardy task. Never satisfied with what he possesses, he always greedily yearns for more - a facet of his personality which many assume has let him stay so oddly sane and intact over potentially eons of existence.
As he is an undead, he requires no hygiene. He keeps as intimidating a presence as possible to strike fear into the hearts of his enemies, but recognizes tidiness and presentability to some degree is the key to any King's reputation and presentation.
Social
Incomparably ancient, Van Hawk has walked the world of Ea for so long that he predates even
The Aenorian Empire and
The Aurelian Hegemony of Man - he has reigned as Commander of his own personal army, The Infinite Horde, for thousands of years and has ever been unchallenged in that position; though only recently, driven by the chaos of the times, has he finally founded a nation of his own and crowned himself its leader.
Due to his extreme age, the accomplishments of his past reigns, if any even existed, are utterly unknown and have been lost to the sands of time.
Outside of his legions of highly loyal followers, knights, and soldiers as well as his infinite undead hordes, Van Hawk was known to once have been incredibly close to the Lich-King
Barkhan the Eternal...possibly as a Knight serves a liege, or possibly as a companion. Now, with the Lich-King's passing, he has become a close friend of the leader of
The Venau Necrocracy.
As a being who styles himself a villain beyond compare, Van Hawk has contacts and relations with most all beings on Corexus - though typically through the lens of a villainous conqueror who once laid siege to their lands. All fear his name, and all fear the approach of his legions upon their lands - for the approach of the Doomknight and his infinite horde means only death.
Any family he had likely died long, long ago or was perhaps even more nefariously killed by his own hand.
Van Hawk's views on religion are mostly unknown, as he worships a deity so ancient as to either be nothing more than a product of his imagination or so incomparably ancient as to have long since died out and been forgotten. The exact name of this deity to which he pays homage is unknown, but the symbol, a skeletal hand grasping a star within a clenched fist, is both the symbol of the undoubtedly pagan faith he worships as well as the symbol of the kingdom and armies he leads.
The symbol matches no known deities past or present, nor any demon lords, Infernal Dukes, Daemons, or Outsiders of any kind - and this, combined with his own refusal to speak on the topic, means next to nothing is known of it or any gods or faiths it may once have represented.
Van Hawk is an utterly driven being, possessing an unholy charisma born of his deadly drive, ambition, confidence, and unshakeable zeal. He is a legendarily talented motivator and speaker, and his powerful warrior's aura is such that his very presence demands respect and fealty, such that few who enter his presence can do anything but kneel before his innate majesty. He has an ineffable air of regality born of millennia of life, and has a powerful, commanding voice that can silence a crowd with a single imperious word. In many ways, his immense charisma stands at odds with yet also somehow complements his nature as an undead creature - for he emits an aura of terror so palpable that living beings cannot help but feel their breath catch in their throat and their bodies lock up at his merest presence.
However, on top of this, Undead cannot help but obey him if he so desires, since his very nature as a Doomknight means Undead beings are completely incapable of disobeying him be they sentient or mindless.
Van Hawk's mannerisms are, much like the man himself, viciously cruel and utterly blunt - he is direct and to the point, and rarely wastes time with getting his points across. He stands at attention in military posture by default, and moves with purpose and efficiency.
While he has no pets, Van Hawks' greatest hobby is the collection and protection of art and other relics of culture - and he is even rumored to enjoy painting himself.
Van Hawk's speech, as befits his undead nature, is droning and filtered - as if passing through several layers to be heard. It is often described as booming and hollow, as if reverberating off the inside of his armor before being released out into the world.
Former Ally (Important)
Towards Barkhan the Eternal
History
As the two founders of The Venau Necrocracy, Barkhan the Lich-King and Van Hawk the Doomknight were two beings that were as thick as thieves...they conquered the frozen wastes of the north together, and built up a nation built on order and equality for all...and, though both loathe to admit it, they were perfect counterbalances to each other. Barkhan, to balance out Van Hawk's ruthless brutality with cold, calculating reason, and Van Hawk, to keep Barkhan from languid torpor and laziness, and to keep his ally focused and motivated, as well as to prevent him from slipping into his fits of extremity and rage when angered.
However, they rapidly fell out of favor with each other over a dispute whether or not to help Naomi Faedra with her rebellion against The Empire of Draconia's tyranny and bigotry against inhumans and monsters...Barkhan the Eternal understood her plight, but, bound by The Elvenwood Accords signed at the beginning of the age which bound his nation and all other western nations to peace as penance for their actions in The Age of Warring States, could not bring himself to violate his word and chose to preserve politics over helping her.
Van Hawk, enraged that his ally and friend would dare commit such an act that he saw a perversion of the ideals they founded the country upon, spat in the face of his former ally and renounced him as a languid coward, taking his undead legions and dullahan knights with him southwards to join Naomi Faedra's fledgling army that would one day become The Inhuman Coalition.
After his friend left him, it was said Barkhan the Eternal would not awake from a depressed fit of languid apathy for nearly a year...and ever since, many believe that none can truly "fix" him like his oldest and closest friend, Van Hawk...the only one capable of truly counterbalancing Barkhan's extremeties with his own. Much like yin and yang, they now drift forever apart...and with Van Hawk's vanishing, their reunion seems eternally out of reach.
Rival (Vital)
Towards Raphael the Brave
History
A relationship that has borne fruit none could have possibly foreseen, Raphael has become surprisingly acquainted with Van Hawk after he dueled the legendary Doomknight on the fields outside the Kilnagh Thicket during the waning years of the Age of Troubles - dueling the Doomknight to prevent his Infinite Horde from using the Thicket as an army base to refuel on lumber and settle Needlebar as his temporary Headquarters in the interim.
While the duel that ensued was "won" only due to the specific terms set by both sides rather than a true defeat handed on either side, the two quickly warmed on each other - Raphael, while he despises the villainy The Doomknight has perpetuated, respects him as a man of his word and seeks to one day either redeem him onto the path of good or defeat him once and for all while Van Hawk himself came to see the young fighting savant as an amusing rival, upholding his promise to leave the Thicket in peace at his "loss" with the promise of an eventual rematch with Raphael in the future - naming him "The Doomed Son" and daring him to venture to his lands of Crael Adra far to the north if he dared to approach him in his lair, leaving him with a horrendous scar across his neck and chest as a reminder of their battle.
As the terrifying undead warlord who has supposedly lived for untold milennia, Van Hawk has a suitably impressive hoard to match his long life and immaculate record of accomplishments. He has sacked, looted, and brought to ruin cities, towns, and even entire countries at the heel of his undead hordes, and as such his vaults run nearly infinite with ancient works of art, arms, armor, and ancient relics all long since lost from both memory and the world at large.
Additionally, he possesses a well-known reputation as an avid appreciator of art, history, and all forms of culture; and as such, Van Hawk has collected hundreds upon hundreds and even thousands of ancient works of art, pieces of culture from empires long since crumbled, relics from bygone ages, and more that no doubt tells a tale of his records all through history. Though the exact location of "Van Hawk's Vault" is a subject of constant mystery and topic of constant treasure hunting, it has never been found, so the exact scope of his wealth, while likely unfathomable, is most likely doomed to be known by him and him alone.
