Ryld

Ryld is a charismatic and wealthy corsair who hails from Homyn nobility. While he often flaunts his wealth and privilege, he usually uses them for good to improve the lot of his fellow corsairs and the community at large.   As a former member of the Lunar Brigade, Ryld leverages alchemical spells and firearm proficency as well as his familiar, Skadi the Boreal Wind. His most powerful asset is his Amulet of Order, which drains his life force but grants him incredible charisma.

Early Life

Ryld is the fourth son of the Count of Ruby , a Homyn moon in Io's East Orbit. A dwarf moon barren of natural life, Ruby's economy nevertheless thrives as a tourist destination thanks to its rich culture.   Ryld's talents and aspirations were heavily influenced by his older siblings. His eldest brother, Thomas was groomed to succeed his ailing father from a young age. His older sister, Selene found her interests studying the dream world at the Homyn Academy of Natural Sciences. His older brother Owen, a portly and jovial sort, made a fortune of his own working for the Io East Orbit Company.   As the youngest child, Ryld decided to carve a niche of his own by enlisting in the Lunar Brigade. There, he acquired his familiar, a fox with snowflakes for fur named Skadi. He also befriended a commoner named Esteban who became his second in-command.

The Parade Battle

Upon finishing his tour in the Lunar Brigade, Ryld reunited with his family for Ruby's Carnival. While he had only been gone for two years, he found his father had aged ten. In poor health, it seemed his brother's accession to the throne might occur sooner than anyone thought.   Word had gotten out through the Lunar Brigade that an organization called the White Lion Armada intended to interfere with the upcoming Carnival celebrations. Ryld and Esteban set about town to question members of Ruby's seedy underbelly. There, Ryld learned that the white lions had hatched a plot to assassinate Ryld's father at the upcoming Carnival parade. Ryld rushed back to the castle and joined his father on their float.   The White Lion Armada carried out their attack, whereupon Ryld discovered that the perpetrator was his own brother, Thomas. Thomas sought a magical amulet his father wore which could drain the user's life force to give them the power to influence people. His father had been using it to increase Ruby's prosperity, but Thomas had grander designs for such a powerful implement.   Driving up to Ryld on a nearby float, the two brothers proceeded to fight. Ryld managed to save his father's life, but at the cost of Esteban's. Swearing vengeance and bearing parade-related trauma, Ryld left home with his father's amulet to ensure it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands.

Joining the Corsairs

After the attempted Carnival assasination, Ryld met Jin Bei the leader of the Corsairs. Jin Bei explained that he was forming a group of Corsairs to oppose the white lion armada and offered Ryld a nomination into the order. Ryld took him up on the deal and travelled to Lion City to sit for the corsair exam. There, he met two other candidates, a Koan artificer named Thurmacc and a koan squire named Titus. Together, they managed to defeat a giant automaton that was wreaking havoc on an abandon factory. Ryld and Thurmacc gained nominations into the Corsairs, but Titus did not. Nevertheless, they found the young Koa to be an amiable sort and let him join their crew.

Fighting the Blue Frogs

Ryld spent much of his early career as a corsair helping Titus investigate a group called the Blue Frogs, an ancient sect of imperial secret police who some believed still lingered on the fringes of Koan society and planned to restore the Koan Empire. Throughout their investigations, they discovered not only that the Blue Frogs were real, but that they operated a secret base in the sunken Koan city of Magnikar.   They attempted to assault the secret base only to be captured by the Blue Frogs. They were tortured by an insane film director named Voden, who made them watch movies that would turn them into the Blue Frogs' slaves. Luckily, the party arrived rescued Ryld and his friends before the brainwashing could take effect. Ryld decided to join the party for a little while, figuring their mission to secure Princess Halle's marriage with the Koan knight, Sir Reglas, would benefit his family.   After destroying the Blue Frogs' base, Ryld accompanied the party to Alteri Island to recruit a powerful knight named Sir Latro to help the Blue Frogs. Ryld found Sir Latro to be a stubborn sort, but using the power of his amulet got the knight to agree in writing to return to Balphuran and aid the Koan Republic in exchange for Ryld's assistance with dealing with a mutant outbreak on the island. After completiong his task, Ryld proceeded to get black out drunk with the rest of the party and ended up getting briefly imprisoned for stealing The Alteri Diamond with a stripper named Nasty Graham.   Ryld woke up with little memory of the previous night and infected by the alteri virus with the rest of the party. He assisted them in braving the mutant infested island, gaining a few mutations of his own, including temporarily being stricken with a "baby legs" form that stunted his gait.

Leaving the Party

After the party restored order to Alteri island, Ryld decided he would honor his end of the deal with Sir Latro and help his squire Silas bring the remaining mutants there to heel. He said his farewells to the party and offered his thanks, unsure if their paths would cross again in the future.
