Dragonborn Species in Deabros | World Anvil

Dragonborn

Dragonborn culture in Voltseiani is a descendent of Vesynite culture intertwining with the unique presence of Volthaarius. Since Nes' death and Volthaarius' disappearance from the world, Voltseiani culture has continued to grow and transform on its own. Dragonborn enjoy a gender-fluid, Nessist society that believes in the entire pantheon of Deabros, including the "Children": Janus and Olivia.   Dragonborn fall into two pillars of thoughts when it comes to the importance of their species in the world: Inheritors and Mortalists. A large portion of dragonborn believe that they are the holders of divine responsibility over the world. This belief comes with a sense of entitlement, self-importance, and a heavy dose of superiority. Meanwhile, another large portion rejects this way of thought and seeks to keep their people humble.   Outside of religion, dragonborn share a powerful respect for their creators: Volthaarius and Nes. Many dragonborn complete pilgrimages to Keltia, Dawnrest, and the Field of Heroes.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Physical Build

Most commonly, but not universally, dragonborn are large and muscular, with the bell curve of heights range most commonly between 6 to 7 feet tall, and averaging around 250 pounds. Dragoborn bodies are sturdy and densely built, suited for strength-based activities. Researchers note that their bodies are absolutely not built for pure physical flight, as their bone structures and their musculature do not mirror the hollow bones and lean muscles of Deabrosi avian life.

Dragon Features

Scales

Their skin is covered in fine scales, in a vast variety of different colorings, including reds, blues, greens, blacks, white, golds, silvers, copper, brass, or bronze. All dragonborn hail from Volthaarius, the Traveler in the Silver Mist, and so coloring is not an indicator of lineage.

Feathering

It is not uncommon for dragonborn to also feature feathering in some areas of their body and face. These feathers do not typically cover large areas of their bodies, but they do accentuate features.

Head

Dragonborn have a distinct draconic head with no external ears, only small ear holes on the sides of their heads. Their faces feature a reptilian snout and strong jawline, and they typically have sharp, pronounced teeth.

Eyes

They have large, expressive eyes that often glow slightly, with colors that match or complement their scale color.

Claws

While dragonborn hands and feet are humanoid in shape, they naturally end in claws that are both functional and aesthetic. It is not uncommon for dragonborn in the world outside of Voltseiani to trim and shape their claws into a more acceptable shape by other societies' standards.

Tails

Dragonborn in Deabros both have and do not have tails. Tails, like scales, come in a variety of shapes, forms, sizes, and colorings.

Respiratory Adaptation

Dragonborn are often known to emit a unique element through some unique features of their respiratory system. Dragonborn have been able to unleash flame, icy or cold winds, poisonous gases, streams of acid, or streaks of lightning from their mouths.

Thermoregulation

Their scale-covered skin offers a level of natural armor and likely cold-blooded nature. That being said, most dragonborn exhibit a low-level, automatic bodily system of magic that helps regulate their body temperature. This helps prevent injuries or death commonly seen with other scaled beasts.

Biological Traits

Ability Score Increase Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.   Draconic Ancestry You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.   Draconic Ancestry
DragonDamage TypeBreath Weapon
Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Bronze Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Copper Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Gold Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Green Poison 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
Red Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Silver Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
White Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
Breath Weapon You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.   Damage Resistance You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dragonborn have a higher than average fertility rate. Dragonborns are not limited to heterosexual reproduction. Dragonborn are capable of reproducing from same-sex relationships. No one has yet to investigate how this is the case and it is currently not entirely known whether or not sexual intimacy has any part in a dragonborn couple's reproduction. When dragonborns do reproduce, they have a high chance of having multiple births. Dragonborn are able to reproduce by laying eggs at about 17 to 18 years of age, though they are not considered adults until 20 years.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dragonborn are omnivorous and can sustain themselves off both plants and meat, however, their bodies process meat much more easily. In fact, it has been noted that dragonborn who favor more plant-based foods tend to have more nutrient-based issues than those with a more balanced diet or a diet that favors meat and animal products.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Voltseiani Commune of Nessism

The religious organization that continues to read, interpret, and publish studies of the religious writings of Nes Diaz. They also weigh in on real world developments and issues, interpret the wills of the gods based on their domains and the writings of Nes and Volthaarius.

The Inheritors

The Inheritors believe they have inherited the will of the gods that directed the Draushum. This has been especially true since the disappearance of Volthaarius. Since the end of dreams, the Inheritors have claimed to be working on a way to continue his role as the Dreamweaver, but still have not accomplished this.   Additionally, the Inheritors believe the "true line" of Nes and Volthaarius, the biological line of Volaris, to be true divinity. Most of Volaris' descendents reject this mentality, and not a single member of Volaris' line publically endorses this position.

The Mortalists

Mortalists believe that dragonborns are mortal, just like every other race in Deabros. They celebrate that all creatures were created by the divine and this makes them no more important than all of the other races. In fact, some Mortalists point to the fact that dragonborn are even further removed from the gods than a majority of the other races, as they were created by other creations of divine.

Gender Ideals

Gender roles among the dragonborn are fluid, with less emphasis on gender binaries. Roles typically assigned based on gender in other societies, such as caretaking or leadership, would be distributed based on individual preference, ability, or societal need rather than gender.   This flexibility extends to attire and personal expression, with clothing and adornments not strictly gendered, allowing for a wider expression of individal identity.

Common Dress Code

Dragonborn wear clothing and armor that accentuates their draconic heritage, but clearly shares some design origins with the Vesynites, favoring darker hues or two-tone, high-contrast designs.   Elegant dragonborn clothing features elaborate, flowing garments adorned with motifs that echo the vine and floral patterns of the Vesynites' attire and the scale-like embellishments akin to the Draushum. Jewlery and accessories might incorporate elements of different Draushum, such as hazy mists, stars, moons, storms, etc.
