S8: The Nightshade Hermit Report

General Summary

13th Zarantyr

The party left Havenglen, traveling to the hermit in the forest to the east, and was accosted by the parents of the children they had previously terrorized. The party explained what the children had done and downplayed the actions they had taken against the children. Kai managed to convince the men to back off.
Later, a woman appraoched them and thanked them for their service with the manticore. She offered to give them copper as a reward, but the party declined and convinced her to keep the money.
Reaching the forest, Esi guided the party through the forest (with the help of Kai and her Orb of Direction). Along the way, they stumbled upon crows feasting on a dead deer and found the crows had begun following them.
Reaching the field of Nightshade flowers, the party was entranced, and Kai and Dhok failed to resist the pull. Aethelwulf counter-charmed Kai and pulled her closer to the edge of the field before Darklings appeared and attacked Dhok. The leader used darkness to cover them and they dealt severe blows to the party before well placed attacks and magical blasts weakened them and Dhok used Faerie Fire to reveal most of the Darklings. Wtih vision of the enemy, the party quickly dispatched all but one before taking a brief rest and continuing their journy.
Arriving at the wood and thatch shack fo the hermit, they knocked on the door and was greeted by Caderyn, a diminutive and old woman, rousing from slumber. She invited the party in for tea and made conversation with them, regailing them of stories of her past; traveling the world with a druid companion and using his magic to reach mountains and the deep waters of the Lake Galifar. Afterwards, she was aided by the party with crafting poultices to return to the village.
During the conversation, Caderyn made cryptic comments alluding to seeing and understanding things beyond the obvious. Esi pulled Caderyn aside as the party was leaving to speak with her privately.
