Character Creation

When building a character in Edinia, you should think of everything on a larger scale. Your character has been chosen, either by destiny or by a god, why is that? When thinking about your background, consider what would call a god's attention or what omen foretold of your great destiny. And remember, your character's deeds will be remembered in bard tales for the rest of history, either because they heroically succeed or tragically failed.

This section will walk you through the process of creating a hero in Edinia. The order the sections are laid out should provide a feeling of a guide. When it comes to character options, these are pulled from a myriad of places. As previously mentioned, don't assume you know the definition of something if it shares a name with a concept you're already familiar with (For example, some changes have been made to the Human race option). The list of steps are:

  1. Choose your class;
  2. Think about a subclass;
  3. Choose your race;
  4. Pick a god (or not) ;
  5. Select your supernatural gift;
  6. Flesh out your background.
Before jumping into it, be sure to read the Rules Refinement article as it may impact your choices. The next sections go deeper into each step of creating a character.

Class

Possibly the most important decision you need to make is your class. When picking a class, you may pick any of the classes available in the official Wizard of the Coast Player's Handbook and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
You can view details about each of the classes in the Player's Handbook or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. If there's a different class you'd like to play that isn't listed here, please get in touch so we can discuss the possibility.

Subclasses

Classes can vary wildly based on their subclass. You don't need to commit to a subclass at character creation but having one in mind helps flesh out a background and even guide your character's personality.   The available subclasses are all those present in the Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and the subclasses listed in this wiki:     The subclasses in this wiki are modified (except The Forgotten God and School of Fate) subclasses from different supplements and they're flavored for the Edinia setting but you're welcome to pick any available subclass. Remember however that the power you wield may have consequences (for example a Necromancer, Erebos might bless you with the power to raise the dead but Athreos but take issue with that).

Race

The races in Edinia are different from what you may be used to in the Forgotten Realms. You may pick one of the following:   Don't focus too much on the mechanical nature of the races. Rather, build a character that thematically fits what you imagine. To expand your options even further, you can use the rules for custom lineage found in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. This will allow you to modify your ability score increase and even swap proficiencies.

Gods of Edinia

The gods play a very active role in the lives of mortals. Every mortal in Edinia knows that Erebos begrudgingly guards the dead in the Underworld, that Athreos guides the dead to their final (most of the times) resting place, or that Ioras and Mogis are in constant battle with each other. Below is a list of all the gods in Edinia. The list is sorted by the most presence in everyday life to least presence. For example, Heliod is often praised every morning at sunrise and everyone acknowledges him on a daily basis, while Karametra is only praised during harvests or by shepherds).   The order is unrelated to how powerful a god is and their presence differs from culture to culture (eg. Nylea is very often worshiped in Setessa while the Triton's favour Thessa). Each of the god's articles contains information that every mortal in Edinia knows, you should give them each a read. If you believe your character (due to their background) should know more about a given god, please let me know.   Your character is the champion of a god, once you have an understanding of each of the gods, you should pick which god has chosen your character. As your approval with your god increases, you'll gain bonuses and new abilities. Keep in mind that each member of the party will be the champion of a god and you all need to work together to achieve your goals. Picking a Mogis when another member picks Iroas, or picking Erebos while someone else picks Heliod, could prove challenging (but not impossible if you can explain how that would work).   You can also decide that your character isn't chosen by a god and instead will change the world despite the presence of the gods. This would normally place you at a disadvantage compared to other characters since you won't gain access to the new powers and abilities, in this case, you should pick the Iconoclast Supernatural Gift (more info on the next section), this will provide you with the same ability progression as if you were the chosen by a god. Note that having the Iconoclast supernatural gift and picking a god to champion are mutually exclusive.

Supernatural Gifts

Most heroes of Theros have some kind of supernatural aid to help them achieve their goals. Often this aid comes from the gods, but some heroes might find their support from other beings, such as the sphinx Medomai, an oracle like Atris or Kydele, or a repository of mystical knowledge. Some heroes are born with supernatural power or born as a result of supernatural events.   Your character will have a supernatural gift, it helps to choose it now as it may mold your background. You should also consider where the gift came from. Is it tied to the god you serve? Was it the result of a fateful encounter with a sphinx or an oracle? Does it indicate the nature of your birth?   Instead of one of the supernatural gifts mentioned above, you can choose a Feat from the different official sourcebooks. The feats should have a heroic meaning behind them. Here are a few examples:
  • A snake emerged from my mouth before I took my first breath—an omen of my gift for deception. (Actor)
  • I hear voices on the wind, warning me of danger. (Alert)
  • Iroas gifted me with physical prowess, intending to see me compete in the Iroan Games. (Athlete)
  • I feel the vitality of the earth beneath my feet, and it refreshes my strength when I rest on it. (Durable)
  • The stars of Nyx are never hidden from my sight, revealing their secrets to my eyes. (Keen Mind)
  • I hear the echoes of the gods’ speech in every mortal language and trace the patterns of Nyx in the written word. (Linguist)
  • The gods smile on me, but I dread the day when they withdraw their favor and my luck runs out. (Lucky)
  • As a child, I used to run through the woods and play with a giant lynx—which, I learned later, was an emissary of Nylea. (Mobile)
  • The sun’s light brings what is hidden to clear view in my eyes. (Observant)
  • I ate a magical fruit that blessed me with extraordinary resilience. (Resilient)
  • I studied with a supernatural tutor. (Skilled)
  • I was bathed in the waters of a mystic river that left my skin resistant to harm—and glittering with starlight. (Tough)

Background

  What makes a hero? Is it a quality of birth that sets some mortals above others? Is it a blessing from the gods? Is it a matter of fate, spun out in the strands of a divine tapestry, charting the course of a hero’s life from miraculous birth to glorious end?   When choosing a background, feel free to use any of the official Backgrounds, and here are some extra choices:
  • Athlete
  • God-Scorned
  • Returned
  When thinking about your background, please consider how you arrived in Andrios and how did you become a member of the council.
