Queen Irena Orbeck

Queen of Kureta

1870

Queen Irena Orbeck is Kureta's first non-human monarch. Although she is loved by her people, Irena's rule has been somewhat controversial.   As a Half-Elf, she has long outlived the usual life expectancy of a Kuretian ruler. This fact alone would not have caused an issue, however, Queen Irena has chosen to not have any children. Although Irena has never married, it is commonly known that she has had relationships exclusively with women. Irena's decision not to have children, although respected by the royal court, has raised many questions in regards to the line of succession.   The queen's sister, Valkia Orbeck, served in the traditonal role of Knight-Princess, and so had foregone any claim to the throne. Some argue however that her children should be next in line, especially as Valkia fulfilled her role so dutifully - getting directly involved in issues and conflict, unlike most of the previous Knight-Princesses.   Irena's natural heir was her younger sister, Princess Olwyn Orbeck. Olwyn, a Human, passed away of natural causes before Irena however, and so the line of succession has defaulted to Olwyn's children, with Princess Cecelia Orbeck next in line for the throne.   Irena has served the past few decades dutifully, but many suspect that she never fully embraced the role. She rarely attends public engagements, and is generally seen as quite reserved.

Legacy

Irena Orbeck is the first daughter of Queen Ophelia Orbeck, and heir to the Kuretian throne. Her father, Ral'Kaseer was an Elf from the city of Erfu who passed away due to an illness. Irena was the only child the couple had, though she is the oldest of 4 siblings - 1 adopted and 3 half-siblings.   From a young age, Irena was prepared for her eventual role as Queen of Kureta. As tradition dictates, the queen adopted a child shortly after Irena's birth, a Half-Elf called Ursa Orbeck. The two children were raised together in constant competition. This competition is believed to produce great rulers.   Irena is free spirited, and can often be found in the palace gardens taking in the peace and tranquility of nature. More than once she has been found outside of the palace walls, attempting to mingle with the common folk.   Irena is well tempered, though her quiet and soft-spoken nature makes her come across as quite shy. Irena is a big fan of the arts, and has a large collection of paintings and other works of art in her chambers.   Recent rumours suggest that the Princesses Irena & Ursa are closer than sisters should be.
