Session 2.25
General Summary
After negotiating a diplomatic means to resolving the conflict to the island’s Elven neighbors the party prepared to see their plan through as they awaited the following day for the Terra Trial, an ancient tradition involving a one on one duel to the death where the winner claims his spoils, but also grants the dying wish of his slain opponent. With some back and forth between the Wood Elves and the Drow. The group learned that Lord Luthien of the Wood Elves wanted all the Drow to leave the island, while his dying wish was to cede leadership of his people to Zhorn. On the other hand, Lord Claremont of the Drow had wished Lord Luthien to step down from his leadership role. As for his dying wish he would see his daughter(Arawen) marry off to Lord Luthien’s eldest son, Renwick. With the terms of the Trial set, the party, led by Fannti, would serve as the impartial arbiters to this occasion.
Upon returning to the keep, the council members were hard at work planning an event for the following day to keep the villagers safe in the keep should there be violence that spilled over. They ultimately decided on an all day long festival, and upon waking up in the morning preparations were well underway as pastries were being made, decorations were being hung, and security arrangements were being established. Around noon, as villagers were trickling in, two Elven ambassadors arrived on a beautiful cart, being pulled by two large wood elk. These two elves happened to be the offspring of Lords Luthien and Claremont, Prince Renwick, and Princess Arawen. The two adolescent nobles were sent to escort the group to Starfall Crater, site of the Terra Trial.
Trying to gather information on the two elves, Fannti was able to ascertain that Princess Arawen was well attuned to the political climate of the island, while Prince Renwick did not appear as mature as his Drow counterpart. Throughout the 2.5hr journey to the southeast of the keep Fannti was able to makeout humanoid figures all throughout the entirety of their trip. Upon arriving at Starfall Crater the group was ushered to an observation tower, where waiting for them was Lord Luthien, and Lord Clarement sitting on opposite ends of a table, as well as the terms of the Trial in between them. After checking for the accuracy of the wishes of the two Elven leaders, Fannti signed the document, and the two combatants headed for the arena floor leaving the party alone to take in the magnitude of the occasion.
From this vantage point Rhorn and Fannti was able to pick out some suspicious observers, once the duel started Rhorn had positioned himself close to the Princess Arawen and the Drow royal family, and Zhorn had done the same with Prince Renwick and the Wood Elves while Fannti and Priestess Luna remained in the observation tower where they could survey the entire crater.
Once combat began, it was a pretty even back and forth duel, with the spectators living and dying with each strike and parry. Again the party, at different intervals, noticed a few late arriving spectators making their way towards the royal seating sections. Looking to protect the young nobles, both Rhorn and Zhorn attempted to make their way to their box, but was halted about 10ft away, while Fannti tried to message Lady Arawen who was preoccupied by the status of his father. At one point, Zhorn was cut and caused a commotion intimidating those nearby to reveal his attacker. His erratic behavior along with other factors had forced his bodyguards to get him to evacuate his area. Meanwhile Rhorn after identifying a potential attacker, intercepted him, and promptly disposed of him by cutting him clean in half with Surge.
Before the attacks could intensify, Lord Claremont put an end to Lord Luthien, his two shortswords and lightning quick attacks proving too much for the Forest Lord to handle. This abrupt end to the duel as well as Fannti thunder stepping into the middle of the arena causing the top half of the observation tower to shatter, forced the assailants to disappear back into the crowd and flee.
The aftermath was filled with mixed emotions by all the elven onlookers, punctuated by speeches by Fannti, Lord Claremont, and the newest leader of the Wood Elves who gave a less than rousing speech.
