Zhorn Landstander
Zhorn is a mountain of a man hailing from the Goliath tribes of the Yuma Mountain Range. At an early age Zhorn and his brother Rhorn were relocated to Peche. This move greatly affected him, as a child he kept to himself and didn’t make a lot of friends at first. As he matured however, Zhorn felt a sense of community to the citizens of Peche because they have always been very welcoming to him and his brother, and let him open up at his own pace. What was most unique of his adopted hometown is that many of it’s citizens were of a different race which made Zhorn felt right at home.
As a young adult, the Brandis Union made a call out to eligible villagers to join their standing army. Out of a sense of patriotism and wanting to give back to his town Zhorn enlisted. Once in the Union's standing army, Zhorn was involved in more of a policing capacity being involved in a skirmish of two mostly against, gnolls & goblins, keeping trade routes safe from bandits, and even participated in a few border confrontations against both the Chaviss Republic and the Galvian Federation who were encroaching the demilitarized zone.
During one life changing mission, Zhorn and his men were sent to disband a group of Federation extremists congregating in the Forest of Secrets. Zhorn and his men were captured, being mistaken as spies for the Republic. His time spent imprisoned opened Zhorn’s mind to the harsh realities of war.
Growing up, he had always romanticized being a soldier in a formal army meant that all combatants fought by a certain code. Sure, a soldier could fall during battle, but fighting to protect a person, place, or idea was always an honor. When one laid down arms, one could expect to be taken as prisoner, treated humanely while under custody, and then released back to your commanding officer in exchange for the opposition’s prisoners. That was not the case however.
While in captivity he saw his men being tortured and malnourished in order to extract information that they didn't have. Threats were made against his men’s family. Even a time or two death was floated around. These uncivilized infractions really tainted his once honorable view on armed service and awakened an inner rage in Zhorn which manifests itself in incredible feats of strength. He lashed out, broke free of his cage, and attempted to break his men free, however, was ultimately thwarted. Although he did not kill anyone, Zhorn was placed in solitary confinement and was ready to be executed, when an official order from the Union reached the prison camp and he and his men were ultimately released.
With Zhorn now questioning his identity and what it means to be a soldier, he was given leave of the Union Army and decided to return to Peche to be with his brother Rhorn. Upon his return, news of a nephew had softened the calluses. Furthermore, he found a job as muscle in Peche's Tavern, The Ox and the Ass, where he can use his natural physicality to intimidate without actually having to resort to violence.
When the call for the formation of the militia came. Zhorn was inherently reluctant to join, but being the most battle hardened of all of the villagers, and wanting to ensure his brother’s safety(a promise he had made to his sister in law, Amelia). Zhorn once again picks up his weapons in defense of not only the village that took him in and raised him, but also of his family.
