Purgatory Gulch General Store
Purpose / Function
The Purgatory General Store is the fine, clean, well-stocked purveyor of General Goods for residents of Purgatory Gulch, ranchers around Oatman Canyon, and visitors to our fine town. We keep one shelf of special stock for our underage customers, but everything else on the shelves is ready for purchase.
Local Crafting where applicable!
Proprietor Jaeke Blaze is glad to take down your order so he can personally fill your basket!
Contents & Furnishings
The store itself is laid out with most of the goods attractively arranged on shelves behind the long counter, the idea being that a customer will present their basket and list of desired goods, and the smiling human man in the vertically striped shirt and the clean green apron will whisk the customer's basket away (empty) and return (filled) to settle up the total purchase price. The goods which a customer could pick up on their own include some woven baskets and a variety of brightly colored sacks.
Also on the customer's side is a "hall tree" for people who want to put their hats on the shelves and hang their coats or their weapon belts while they shop. Civilized!
Close behind the counter, proprietor Jaeke Blaze keeps a little sitting area for himself where he will spot approaching customers in time to stand up before they enter. He has a well-padded rocking chair next to a small table. He spends a lot of time in that chair, once his morning cleaning routine is finished. On the nearby table he usually has a kettle on a trivet, a small stein with lid, his current book in mid-read or at least the bookmark he uses, and a dull gray-brown oatman hat with a kerchief tied neatly onto the hatband. Hanging on pegs nearby are five more steins with lids, all about the same size as a coffee mug.
An open staircase on the west wall (to a customer's right) leads from the shopkeeper's area up to the second story. Mayor Blaze lives up there.
Valuables
In pride of place on the wall, well out of any customer's reach, are a pair of glass cases. Each one contains a colorful horse blanket. The style of weaving and the colorful pattern on each is only found in orcish tribal traditions of the Longgrass Plains.
On the countertop are a stack of five baskets, an old brass cash register, a flyswatter, a box of jumbled plain jugs (they probably hold no more than 2 cups of fluid, and were definitely made by amateurs), two heavy lanterns (unlit), and an extremely bent fireplace poker. There's also a polishing rag and a spray bottle more than half full of some kind of fluid, unless Mayor Blaze has put on his hat and headed outside to clean shop windows.
On the shelves are a variety of goods for sale ranging from the commonplace (nails, eggs, rabbit jerky) to the useful (candles and lanterns, quick fire starting supplies, a saw, a few bolts of cloth, thread) to the frivolous (a sextant is maybe useful around here?) or artistic (assorted jams, painted servingware) to the absolutely luxurious (hard candies, those blankets, a short stack of NOVELS). Also available, but out of immediate sight, Mayor Blaze has a variety of tools which he sells on consignment and a limited supply of seed packets.
