Phandalin (Phan-duh-lin)

The frontier town of Phandalin is built on the ruins of a much older settlement. Hundreds of years ago, the old Phandalin was a thriving human town whose people were firmly allied with the dwarves and gnomes of the Phandelver's Pact. However, the same orc horde that sacked the mines at Wave Echo Cave laid waste to the settlement, and Phandalin was abandoned for centuries.   In the last three or four years, hardy settlers from the cities of Neverwinter and Waterdeep have begun the hard work of reclaiming the ruins of Phandalin. A bustling frontier settlement has grown up on the site of the old town, and is home now to farmers, woodcutters, fur traders, and prospectors drawn by stories of gold and platinum in the foothills of the Sword Mountains. Unfortunately, more than a few bandits and brigands have settled here as well, taking advantage of the fact that the area has no local lord or authority to chase them off. A gang known as the Redbrands has controlled Phandalin for the past two months, extorting and bullying everyone in town. The gang is led by a mysterious figure known to the townsfolk as Glasstaff.           Founding Date: Around 951 DR Founders: Settlers from Neverwinter and Waterdeep Date that became a ruin: Information Unavailable Ruler/Owner: Harbin Wester (as of 1481 DR) Alternative Names: None Population Count: Approximately 100-200 Inhabitants' demonym: Phandalinians       Government: Phandalin has no functioning government per se, but is managed by a townmaster. The town's location also makes it a convenient rest stop for travelers on the Triboar Trail.   Defenses: The town lacks a standing militia or city walls, relying on local adventurers for protection.   Industry and Trade: Mining is the primary industry in Phandalin. Trade is mostly local, with a few businesses supplying goods to travelers and trading with nearby cities.   Guilds and Factions: The most influential faction is the local miners' and prospectors' consortium. However, the town has seen problems with the Redbrands, a criminal gang causing unrest.   History: Phandalin was established around 951 DR by settlers from Neverwinter. The town thrived due to the nearby mines but went through periods of trouble and prosperity. Its most recent challenge has been the trouble caused by the Redbrands.   Points of Interest: Notable points of interest include the ruins of Tresendar Manor, the Sleeping Giant tavern, and the mysterious Echo Wave Cave.   Tourism: As a small town, tourism is minimal in Phandalin.
