Fennengath

Fennengath is the continent consisting of the seven Fennengathian nations: Dunwichia, Durtalbachland, Erinia, Hasbachland, Tigue, Yangjuguk, and Yeon.   Fennengath is a large island continent, surrounded by seas and thought to have been isolated for millennia before a great storm, known in Fennengathian histories as The Tempest, shipwrecked explorers from other continents. There has been no contact with those far continents in the nearly one thousand years since The Tempest.

Geography

The continent of Fennengath is approximately 3,000,000 square miles or 7,750,000 square kilometers. The exact area is unknown because some islands have not been officially mapped.   The continent has a range of ecosystems. From the hot deserts of Dunwichia to the cold and windy cliffs of and deep bogs of Yeon and Tigue, from the dense forests of Hasbachland and jungles of Durtalbachland to the savannahs of Erinia and rolling grasslands of Yangjuguk: There is an appropriate climate to be found in Fennengath for nearly every creature.   Fennengath is in the southern hemisphere of the planet, and most maps place south at the top of the map and north at the bottom, because all compasses in Fennengath point south.

Localized Phenomena

Nearly one thousand years ago, an event known in Fennengathian history and legend as The Tempest stranded explorers from other continents on Fennengath's shores. Stormy seas around Fennengath aren't uncommon, but legends say that just beyond the horizon there is a storm that engulfs the rest of the planet. Whether or not that is true or simply a story meant to dissuade sailors from leaving is unclear. What is clear, however, is that no ships that have sailed beyond the horizon have ever returned safely home. Some disappear forever, others wash up on the shores wrecked weeks later, and others still drift back to port emptied of their crews.

History

Fennengathian history is divided into two periods; Pre-Tempest (The Calm) and Post-Tempest (Ages Thence).    Most Pre-Tempest historical records have been lost, horded, or relay stories that more closely resemble myths and legends than academic histories. Years during The Calm were named by ruling families, or the lineage they claimed. However, many families claimed control during overlapping periods. Thus, during the Ages Thence, new historians have tried to piece together a timeline from the clouded histories by running backwards, with the year of The Tempest being Year Zero. The accuracy of this timeline is constantly debated by historians throughout the continent.   Post-Tempest history can be divided into two eras; the First Age and the Second Age.   The First Age of Fennengath includes the first five hundred years Post-Tempest, when those shipwrecked and stranded by the storm began to explore, claim, and colonize the continent. This was a time of dynasties rising and taking root, of nations claiming sovereignty, of monarchs and mayors making alliances and enemies, of mapping the land and spilling blood over borders. The First Age ended in AT 500, when Durtalbachland surrendered the Tandielen Archipelago to Erinia to end a war.   The current year is AT 993, the 493rd year of the Second Age.

Tourism

Of the approximately 30 to 31 million people who live across the continent of Fennengath, most have the freedom to travel throughout. Travel into Durtalbachland and Yeon is somewhat restricted or difficult. Dunwichia, Hasbachland, and Yangjuguk however welcome outsiders who wish to not only travel but immigrate.     Travel is not always easy, some countries have better road infrastructure than others, but there are few places that are impossible to get to.
