Dogs

Domesticated wolves appeared long before written records in Gætíus' World, by which time there were already several different varieties around the world, bred for different purposes such as hunting, herding, pulling sleds, defending people and their belongings as well as for simple companionship.

Bemlan Bear Dogs

Named after their size, vaguely bearlike head and thick, brown fur, bemlan bear dogs are used by Bemlans off the coast of west Emlas to hunt and carry boars and deer.

Húlpakran Hairless Dogs

Brought to Emlas by pakran colonists to defend their fledgling colonies, they have since become popular pets among Enans and wealthy Dalrans living along the coast of Úrtal Sea. Húlpakran hairless dogs are usually dark brown or tan, and often accompany sailors on they journeys across the sea, as the dogs have keen eyesight and are able to spot ships on the horizon long before the crew does.

Marrú Dogs

Marrú dog is a general term for short-haired dogs used mainly for hunting waterfowl along the Namazús River in the Zúdalikí Desert, in southeastern Emlas. Most are medium-sized, with grey fur sometimes with darker markings, and floppy ears.

Pakran Hairless Dogs

Originally used by Pakrans to guard temples, mansions and royal palaces, the pakran hairless dog is now a common pet among pakrans, Jatrilnúxans and especially Rexans. Their skin is usually grey, light- or copper brown, often with lighter irregular markings.
Traditionally, a pair of these dogs -one with gold and jade collar, the other with silver and turquoise one- guard the imperial throne and accompany the emperor wherever he goes. Upon their death, they are cremated and their remains buried in a special cemetery by the palace, and are mourned like warriors.

Sanxean Wool Dogs

Native to western Emlas, sanxean wool dogs are bred for their thick, waterproof fur by Sanxeans, Paróbaxi and bemlans, which is sheared during the summer and used for a variety of clothing along with cedar bark cloth. The dogs are relatively small and usually have white fur, though black and light brown varieties are bred in some regions. Traditionally, they are mostly fed fish and meat scraps.

Talacean Hunting Dogs

Used for millennia by the Taxótans of the Talax Mountains in northeastern Túlmikkía for hunting gazelles and hares, they've since become popular by the Ænateans along the coast to the north, both as pets and to guard livestock.
They are slender, with pointed or -more rarely- floppy ears and curly tails, sporting short, tawny or sand-coloured fur with white feet and neck, along with irregular spots.
Galkans and Orrólans in northern and northwestern Túlmikkía, respectively, keep virtually identical dogs for hunting similar prey.
