Bramble

"Last stop on the road to Celene..."

At the Southern border of The Dullwood lies the trade town of Bramble. Boasting at its height a population of over 4,000 residents and neighboring farmers, today the former boom town stretches to break 2,000. As most business has left town, only the most foolhardy and haunted remain (including a few rumored notorious criminals).   Once Bramble stood as a bastion to the wide variety of religions represented on Mount Celene. Temples and shrines to Gods both forgotten and forgetful stand in disrepair in numerous locations spread across town. A good number of the town drunks are from the ranks of fallen priests, now too lost to make a living anywhere else. These priests have reconfigured their lives and hold down a wide mix of local jobs. Maylor Bratta, proprietor of the "Bountiful Cup" tavern, was formerly a high priest of Moradin.   The farmers who till the lands around Bramble sell their wares to both travellers, while also representing one of the only communities willing to trade goods with the garrison city of Narfell, where hobgoblins currently rule.   The nearly dynastic Neskin line has held mayoral duties for generations. --- Current Mayor, Vernor Neskin.

HISTORY

Bramble was established hundreds of years ago during the Great Pilgrimage, when representatives from a great many faiths made the arduous trek to Mt. Celene to prove their worth. It was almost like a competition between faiths, but all emissaries involved swear their deities came to them in unique visions, just every one about the same time.   Many boom towns shot up almost overnight to assist (and exploit) the travelers with goods, supplies and housing from the harsh Northern nights.   But as suddenly as the it came, the pilgrimage ended with the destruction of Celene, and with it the end of the vast majority of once prosperous towns.   Bramble is one of the few that stuck around. Some say it's due to the strength and bonds of the community within its meager walls. Others say it's because the residents wouldn't be welcome anywhere else. And it's true the town has its share of ne're-do-wells and outcasts, but it's also true that they serve as an extended family for each other. As they say,"In Bramble, even the homeless have a home."   Bramble has its share of transient residents. Many are adventurers ruined by the road, shiftless and aimless. They are very much at home amongst the fallen priests and drunken former knights of deposed kings that frequent Bramble's prodigious taverns (it's also said that here, there's two taverns for every drunk).   There's also a sizable contingent of street urchins wandering the streets. The lone survivors of parents foolish enough to enter the Dullwood in search of magic, or simply the unwanted result of dalliances by travellers with local girls from the surrounding farms and towns (villages and such with even worse prospects than Bramble, if you can imagine).

    Demographics

Bramble is a true melting pot, with demographics normally only seen in large cities. It features large halfling and gnomish communities, as well as a significant entourage from Narfell. All in all, the breakdown skews about 65% human, 20% halfling and gnome, 5% Isagorn, and 10% mixed other.

    Government

Run by a local mayor, and represented in the Freemantle via the Free State of Lyssia. It could be said that Bramble is a vassal town to Lyssia, though this is strictly voluntary.

    Defences

Bramble is defended by a handful of citizen soldiers, mostly farmers, who take up arms when necessary (or are deputized by the constable). Huff Delacot, constable of Bramble, has eight deputies under permanent employ.

    Industry & Trade

Wood and wool, along with some corn.

    Infrastructure

Bramble is fed by a small stream that cuts south from the Blight. It bypasses the Churn, and thus its waters are not contaminated. The town features several watermills to exploit the fresh water source. What Bramble lacks in many modern amenities, such as a modern sewer system, it makes up for in manpower. Everyone in town takes part in the "public works," and Bramblers are pretty good about keeping their dirty little town clean.

    Assets

Bramble is still laden with a plethora of adventuring gear originally for sale to the various pilgrims on their way to Mt. Celene. The primary stores are listed in the map key. Beyond this, Bramble features a good deal of active farmland, from which the residents gain both sustenance as well as profit.

    Guilds and Factions

Member of the Freemantle alliance. Those loyal to each of the individual member states can be found within Bramble. Here, nearly everyone is a transplant. There's a saying, "Never trust a native Brambler."

    Architecture

Bramble predominantly consists of wood and brick homes with thatched roofs. Most buildings are no taller than two stories, and they are all built in a radius around the town square.

    Geography

Bramble sits on the last fertile grounds before the Dullwood and the general desolation of the far north. As such, its crops tend to be those that thrive under semi-harsh conditions, and the harvest tends to come earlier than in most other parts of the Freemantle, due to encroaching cold weather.

    Natural Resources

Wood from the Dullwood (and occasionally the Feywood), food crops from the fields.
