Nix
"In the valley of the shunned..."
The large town of Nix stands on the edge of the Kreeluk Pass in northeastern Hariel Minuta, nearly touching the outer edge of the Wyrmcrest Ridge. It is known for one thing, and one thing alone...
It is where the damned go.
Shortly after The Sundering, during the magical purges in the north, many innocents were mixed up in the grand exodus of the arcanists. As it is widely believed that no Tieflings existed prior to the Sundering, and that they were a "punishment" for (or at least a mutation caused by) it, they were unfortunately lumped in with the blood mages in the average northerner's mind. Some chose to stick it out, dealing with the persecution. Others decided to head south (and even across the ocean).
Once Varuum was established, it's borders were open to peoples of all species and magical inclinations. But not all tieflings felt welcomed. For some, to be amongst humans was to be constantly reminded of their infernal heritage and "wrongness." As a result, a large tribe of tieflings decided to head out on their own, in order to establish a home for themselves.
They headed east and eventually came to the banks of the Upper Zarna River. This, they decided, was the perfect spot to call home. Putting their backs against the Wymcrest Ridge, they established the town of Nix.
Nix also likely contains the largest organized conclave of Isagorn in all of Hariel Minuta. It is rumored that other Isagorn (and goblinoids) have established homes hidden amongst the caves of the Wymcrest, though few have ever attempted to verify this.
Demographics
Government
Nix is run by an elected mayor who serves for a six year term, and who may be reelected indefinitely (if they garner the votes). Though the town is open to any "outsiders" or "displaced" peoples, only tieflings may hold office. The current mayor of Nix is an aging female tiefling named Adal Impunity. Adal has been elected mayor four consecutive terms so far.
Defences
The town maintains an internal police force that doubles as an "army" in times of confilct. This force consists of 200 tieflings and goblinoids known as the "Horns," who somehow manage to keep the daily peace between the disparate peoples behind the walls of Nix.
Industry & Trade
Nix has recently become a vassal state to Varuum, and as such, trades with the nation quite frequently. Though they do not have much in the way of goods to provide, they are steeped in both the arts and magic (often of the dark variety), much of which is highly coveted in the more "mainstream" cities of Varuum.
Infrastructure
To the outsider, Nix is nothing special to look at. But to those it houses, the town is a bastion of civilization, where goblinoid and tiefling live in relative harmony. Though it doesn't feature a modern sewage system, it does employ citizens dedicated to keeping the streets free of waste. Likrwise, it is decided to be in the interests of all residents to keep the town presentable to visitors, if only to prove something to the outside world.
History
Nix was formed somewhere around 800 years ago, as a response to the general persecution of tieflings and other "accursed" races brought about by The Sundering. It has stood as a bastion of acceptance to the outcast ever since.
Architecture
The structures are predominantly made of baked clay with wood frames. Some sandstone is also used, and those building closest to the Wyrmcrest sometimes feature stone walls.
Geography
Nix stands along the Upper Zarna River, with it's back against the Wyrmcrest Ridge. It is the last outpost for those traveling east into the Kreeluk Pass.
Natural Resources
Nix features small patches of farmland, barely sufficient to feed it's general populace. What it can't get from its farms, it gets from trade within Varuum. Some of the goblinoids within Nix have attempted to mine the Wyrmcrest for precious metals, but to this point have come up short.
