Court of Representatives
Belaklara is a land defined by trade, so it is reasonable to assume that those who control the most trade have the most at stake. As the nation began to form, a court of representatives was formed, composed primarily of the wealthiest investors in each city. On paper, this system sounds reasonable: those who have the most money to lose will be the most concerned with keeping the town in shape. In practice, it has proved more complicated, as money continues to flow and humanity becomes less and less of a priority. The towns and cities of Belaklara also have mayors, elected individuals who work with the investors to run the government. The mayors often act as a cultural representative while the investors keep an eye on economics, another system that seems logical on paper but is often abused. To make matters worse, investors often have final say, and in some towns, the relationship between investor and mayor is becoming marred with greed.Culture
The Court of Representatives is starry-eyed for the many riches and resources of Belaklara. But traditionalists, along with groups of people that remember a time before the oligarchy, worry that their pursuit of wealth may come at the expense of the land's history and natural beauty. Investors have begun to control an alarming amount of life in the cities, from owning housing and guilds to controlling the ports for trade.
The cultures of the Wilderness are dying out and secluded, but it is the people that remember this more traditional time that are wary of Belaklara's new direction, wary of what may result from too much eagerness to expand and trade.
