Inverted Tower
The inverted tower is a construction within the Conservatoire lands. It is a hole in the ground with steps around leading to the maze of tunnels and rooms below ground. Only accessible as part of the Phoenix Order and under strict rules following joining their numbers.
Overall
The circular hole is about five spans across. One one side a set of steps circle down to the bottom inside a colonnaded brick build edge. Each step is made of a single block of stone. They circle down tens of spans underground, at the bottom a mosaic full of symbols covers the floor. Symbols cover the columns and the exterior of the arched colonnades. As you descend there is a landing every thirty steps, with a single door off to the side. From the bottom three entrances lead into the passageways beyond. These paths wind round and cross each other forming a maze. The floor is bricked and there are brackets for torches every few spans. Only the Grand Master and the Head of the Phoenix Order are allowed to know the extent of the passageways and what is kept in the different rooms.Rooms within the maze
There are rooms hidden within this maze of passageways: the ceremonial hall of the Phoenix Order, meeting rooms, store rooms, and even guest rooms for visitors they want to hide from the rest of the Conservatoire members.Use of the inverted tower
The Phoenix Guild meet in the rooms under the tower. They congregate at dusk to mourn the passing of the light. The further rooms are used for anything they need to keep hidden. At different times there can be people staying there, or goods moving between different groups across Kaitstud.
Parent Location
Such an interesting stronghold and music as the base of some magics makes this Order quite a power to be concerned about. Interesting that the Order doesn't actively seek to maintain control.
I loved the idea of an inverted tower when I first heard about it (the real one is in Portugal), so I had to include it in my world somewhere. The Order wants control, but hasn't yet achieved it!
