Wyvern Mountain

Geography

As both the tallest and widest of the mountains within the Himheneldar Shel range, Wyvern Mountain stands above all the others.  It's jagged peak and multiple, craterous valleys are perpetually covered in snow, making them a fantastic breeding ground for a number of extremely deadly animals, including it's namesake, the Wyvern, as well as several species of griffon and hippogrif.

Though the mountain is long dormant, it was once a volcano and is believed to have caused the crater in which the city of Shard is now built.

History

Built between 120 and 116BD, the Bastion atop Wyvern Mountain stood as a gateway and guardpost, keeping the forces of Lyras from entering Ilithi from the west. It stood against every siege and invading army for more than fourty years, before agents of the usurper, having infiltrated Ilithi from the south, began cutting supply lines to the bastion in 85BD. Under siege for the majority of 83BD, the attackers, finally out of food, ammunition and supplies, were forced to sally forth and face the undead hordes in the open field. The defenders gave a fantastic accounting of themselves in the field, but were ultimately overrun by the superior forces of the Necromancer and her armies.

In 117AD, the great Gnomish skald, Tyr Magnuson, comprised a ballad to commemorate the fallen defenders, revealing it at the Winter's Veil festival in Ilithi for the Ferdahl to hear.

Late Winter of '83
High up over Ilithi
We were holding Wyvern Mountain.
Couldn't see down through the clouds
But there wasn't any doubt
There were undead there
Beyond the counting
  Mangonels began to roar
Firing up from the valley floor
And through the mist
It looked like lightning
Trebuchets spouting flame
Up through the fog, they came
I will not lie
Meraud! It was fright'ning
  And the Chaplain said
'Boys, we're up so high
If you listen, you'll hear Periel singing softly.'
  Our trebuchet could not fire
Straight down the mountainside
And those undead boys drew closer
The odds were 6-to-1
So when Captain Brown said 'Son
Can you hold on?'
I told him 'No, sir.'
  In the driving rain
With our arrows gone
We sent boulders crashing down around them
  Well we done our best
But they would not turn
And we could not hold them off of
Wyvern Mountain
We saw that all hope was gone
But we thought of the folks at home
And if we ran, surely it would disgrace them
  So as the quarrels flew
There was just one thing to do;
We drew our swords
And turned to charge them.
  Well they struck me down
But there was no pain.
In the darkness one more Elven heart stopped pounding.
  By the morning light
I was glory bound
Before they raised the Usurper's flag on Wyvern Mountain
  By the morning light
We were glory bound
Before they raised the Usurper's flag on Wyvern Mountain

Tourism

Hundreds of people make the trek to Wyvern mountain each year; many are simply tourists to the mountain in hopes of seeing the ruins of the bastion, as well as to view for themselves how seemingly haunted it is by the spirit of it's fallen defenders.

Many more people come to the mountain each year in an attempt to capture wyvern, griffin, or hippogrif eggs for their extreme value on the market as pets and mounts.

Destroyed in 83BD, the Bastion is slowly being rebuilt by the Ilithi Infantry.
