A Truth Amongst Doubts Report
General Summary
Outside of Melora's mansion Emyr suits up. They look around to the gathered party members.
"I'm not getting myself killed over this," he says grimly. "It goes tits up, I'm scramming, no offense to your family, kid." They gesture to Kash You are my distraction. Keep the guards away from me, and I'll get your papers. Throw a brick through the window, do a waltz, kiss a guard, I don't care how you do it."
Everyone nods in agreement, and Emyr flits off in a swirl of black leathers. Kash doesn't know what to do to distract the guards, but thankfully Zela is much better at this. She suggests that he attempt to pretend to break into the mansion to lead the guards away from Emyr, even suggesting he strip down to help with the illusion, a tinge of pink coloring her pale scales. Alynn also joins in, and carefully casts a protection spell on Kash to speed him swiftly.
Kash agrees, stripping off his shirt. It works exactly as they attended, and as the half-naked fighter begins to climb the walls, Melora's guards spot him and cry out. Kash looks over his shoulder and drops immediately, running off to try and lose them in the streets of Paramenthia. Unfortunately, as he runs, the guards catch up with him and tackle him to the ground. Instincts kicking in, Kash flails wildly. He catches one of the guards in the chest, sending them sprawling and giving him a moment to escape.
Meanwhile, the ever-practical Rahvin seeks out one of the captains, and begins to chat him up. After gaining the man's good graces, Rahvin casually suggests that a lunch break would do the men good - it's quite late in the evening, you see, and the guards cannot be expected to keep their strength up for the entire shift without more sustenance. The captain considers it, and finally agrees. Rahvin enthusiastically begins to prepare a spread for the guards that the captain calls back from their shifts to take a momentary pause.
Mola has taken it upon himself to cause yet another distraction - pulling a scarf around his head to disguise himself as a woman, he runs at a returning pair of guards, screaming about losing his baby and flailing his arms wildly. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on your point of view), this does not work. The guards laugh at the drunk schoolboy and toss him off to the side before continuing with their patrol.
Rahvin continues to serve the men with his excellent manners and food - and when he sees Emyr flip over the side of the wall, he quickly dismisses the guards, giving them the rest of his food to take home and share with their families. Then he catches up with Emyr, who shoves the papers they retrieved into Rahvin's hands.
"I hope to never meet you again," he says fervently, then walks away into the city and is soon lost in the twists and turns of the city streets.
Rahvin clutches the papers close, and returns to the others. Looking through the papers, they eventually find a ledger. In it there is a line about 4 necklaces that were purchased from the Baron of Châtelain, a town in nearby Mercercle . Strangely, however, most of the other entries in this book are written in black ink. This one is in red ink. Looking even closer, all of the other red entries come from dukes/duchesses and barons/baronesses, but not every entry that is an item procured from an ennobled individual is entered with red ink.
Everyone agrees that it is now clear that they will have to set out to Mercercle after Mola and Kash's graduation, and so all of them retire for the evening. The next day, they all gather at Eilene's Schol for graduation, led by Benjaman Terrace, Bellatorus valedictorian and terrified of public speaking:
"Fellow students. We have come from all over Adura to attend here. Some of us sacrificed much to be here, and not all of us have made it to graduation unscathed. "But if there was one thing we all share in common, it is the promise of a bright future, that Eilene's Schol has prepared us for! It is a time for celebration - both of ourselves and those who supported us as we learned, grew, and stepped into our own. "I know that the future is scary. That it seems like nothing is certain. But know this: we're all right there with you."Everyone claps as they cross the stage, but for Kash. He is struck by the headaches that have plagued him all his young adult life, but he powers on. Though by the time he is handed his diploma he can barely stand. Then he hears a voice, bone-chilling in the back of his skull: "Congratulations, Kashmeel." The pain immediately eases as Kash looks around in terror. No one is there, and as he sees his family watching him, he finds courage in their proud, smiling faces. At the reception, Allie shyly asks Kash for a dance. He shyly agrees, and as they begin an awkward waltz, Mola spills wine all over his dress clothes (critical failure to dance). He rushes off to the bathroom, and Rahvin follows. His heart is melted by Mola's frantic attempts to wash the stains, and offers his own clothes to Mola while he takes the ruined shirt. Mola accepts, and with his newfound confidence, he walks out to the dance floor and begins to dance better than anyone else had even attempted this evening (critical success to dance). Rahvin, smiling gently, takes the hand of a small halfling girl and dances about the hall with her. It is a good night. A happy night. And there are few here as of late.
