01. Mrs Eren's Basement

In the eastern part of known Merra, the village of Junstol was one of the last settlements before the lands led to Hel and the Dark East. There, a tavern called the Dog's Leg had three childhood friends met to catch up for old times'sake. They were very well on their way to become adults, and already they had some interesting lives.   Surina Myastan, the large Dragonborn was on her way to become a Paladin of the Soulguard. Gilles de Rais told them of his strange theories of magic, and his friends half believed him. Eberond Il'Elaeren had just returned to the village after some years away, and was quite nervous. He seemed to have just recovered from serious injuries.   As they drank mead and ate, the town pharmacist barged into the tavern, calling for help. "Monsters!" she cried, "Monsters have invaded my basement!" The band of friends thought they would help the kind and somewhat ditzy Mrs. Eren. Meanwhile, the half-orc outsider known as Bal'Aur had been listening and on his quest to vanquish a worthy foe, also chimed in he too would help. Mrs Eren said they would need al the help they could get and shoed them the way, except Surina excluded herself as she would need to finish off the remaining part of her lamb.   The three adventurers escorted Mrs Eren to her home and she pointed town the stairs and into the dark of the basement, "It's down there! Please, help me!"   Monsters were a myth, the adventurers knew. Old wives' tales or stories told by parents to scare the children into acting properly. The priests also mentioned the Unknown Hero fighting monsters and closing the Rift thousands of years ago, but only Surina would hold any credence to this, being a follower of Helm, God of Protection.   Bal'Aur led the way down, and came across a hessian bag hat appeared to be making noises. Carefully, he investigated the bag and it jumped in front of him. The half-orc was quick and stomped what turned out to be a poor rat. "Your monster is dead", Bal'Aur called out, somewhat disappointed. "No, the monsters are bigger than that," Mrs EWren replied and it was then that the monsters revealed themselves, barking and mewling. A number of strange, knee high creatures emerged from the dark conerns of the basement and rush at the orc. They were like featherless and eyeless fowl, screeching and pecking with their sharp beaks. Eberond took aim with his crossbow and Gilles' cast bolt of holy power into the basement. Surina had also finished her meal and decided to joining the rest, and the four managed to defeat the strange monsters , despite Gilles receiving a nasty bite.   Whilst Mrs Eren patched up Gilles, the rest argued whether to report this to the watch or temple. The Palladin's arguement won in the end, and they took one of the carcasses to Priestess Graba at the nearby Temple of Helm.   The priestess of Helm was shocked, and promised to report this up the hierarchy. The carcasses were burnt to avoid anything unholy contaminating anyone or anything else.   Was this just a freak occurence or did it allude to something worse?
