Soranna
Soranna
Soranna, meaning "Land Under the Sky," is a region and series of princedoms and republic located in south central Nieden. It is famed for hosting many empires such as the great empire of the Ilsairi, better known as Great Sorrai. On every hill there is a new clan and city-state rising to vie for control.Etymology
The name comes from the modern Auri words Sora and Anna; Sora means sky while Anna is one way to say below. The connection to the sky is due to the association of the region with the gods and the sky being a way to refer to the heavens. The city of Sora'eanna was named after it, and so for this reason it is usually referred to as Soranna'cii while Soranna is saved for the region.
History
The region of Soranna is known throughout history as the origin of the Niedene, however this has been widely disputed and challenged to the point that it is now widely believed that the Niedene originated around modern day Gentarinn. Regardless, the region has been inhabited by Niedene for ages and has long been fought over by various groups. The region was originally imhabited by several peoples, with the most prominent being the Uszinni; the Uszinni were known for creating various works of architecture and infrastructure that would be expanded upon by later groups. The age of the Uszinni would ocme to an end when the Ingharans from the Gendur valley would invade with force to conquer the lands and eventually the Usinni were pushed to migrate to the East where they would arrive on the coast. Most Uszinni would resettle here or begin to flee across the sea to a land known as Volutsya. Notable surviving Uszinni populations existed on the Isle of Sikhas (Sardara) where the people would resist Ingharan control for centuries until eventually being conquered when the volcano erupted on it.The region under Ingharan control would grow wealthy and populated as cities popped up everywhere; however, with every city came a new lord and every hill came a new clan. The region was one of the first to break away from the Ingharan heartland despite their roots and they looked back at valley with desire. The south of the valley was inhabited by similar Ingharan descended peoples known as the Saranari, who went on to rebel against the corrupt nobles who had diverged so much from the common people. This rebellion saw the Ingharan state dissolve and all of Nieden would fall into what has been deemed as the Age of Everlasting Night, a period where the continent was divided into a plethora of petty kings and minor states.
Eventually, a great conquerer named Aremi Kessiar an Ilsairi would rise and create the greatest empire that the Niedene had ever seen until this point. From here, Soranna would grow into an important center of trade and the petty states would be united towards one goal. This would last until the decline of the Empire brought forth the Age of Warring States, which has been ongoing since the 700s.
The region saw immense devastation during the War of Shattered Blades and subsequent War of Dethronement. These conflicts ensured that there would be no central state for centuries to come as everyone would try to gain the upper hand on another to rule. The closest the region came to unity was when Atshara an Ilsairi invaded from Ischarra and reconquered the holy city of Soranna'cii and began to rebuild it. The Kirrentai was established from there, an organization that would regulate temples and religion in order to strengthen the idea of the Emperor's returning and for the Ilsairi to gain influence in other regions.
As of 1568, lords fight one another still, but an increasing number have begun to pledge their fealty to the Ischarri in their city of Soranna'cii.
