Session 075 - Beyond the Black Door

The story so far

After months of traveling and adventure, the Heroes are returning home, taking a shortcut through the magical Godstones portal in the mysterious Earthmaster Site of Telumar.

Athena is also seeking the Black Door, or Telumar's Godstone. Beyond that portal, it has been predicted that she will have an opportunity to start the revenge she seeks.

Part 1 - Enter the Godstone.

At the Earthmaster Earthmaster Site of Temular, Yureb opens the Godstone, and the party steps through to another Godstone in another unknown location. Quazzy recognizes the psionic signature of this new Godstone, but her memory is somewhat fuzzy.

The group finds themselves in an oval-shaped chamber made of black pseudostone. Finding two psionically concealed doors, Yureb manages to open one of the psionic locks. The door opens, revealing a chamber with a Wizard and guards approaching. The heroes have arrived in the Chantry of Arcane Lore in the City of Cherafir, one of the finest magic Guilds, and headquarters of the Order of the White Hand.

Watchguard Anthol Polton interviews the party to determine if they are a threat to the Guild and the City. They are soon joined by the Guildmaster Andri Galven, who is well aware of the character's identity. He has some knowledge of the Heroes involvement in saving the City of Coranan from the nightmare fiend Krasula last year.

He gives the party permission to use the Godstone at will and asked enthusiastically questions Quazzy about her knowledge of the Earthmaster and ancient history in general. The characters are then allowed to leave the Guildhall and enter the City of Cherafir.

Part 2 - Sightseeing

While Yureb and Athena explore the City while Quazzy visits the Hall of Heralds, The Enclave of the Golden Orb, this building holds the heraldic records for most of Harn's great families. Finding an expert in Dwarven genealogy, she learns that the family of Icken Haumager still lives and has registered holdings at the Dwarven Fortress of Zerhun. She is planning to fulfill her promise to the Ghost of Icken Haumager that she would return the Chronicle of Icken Haumager to his kin.

Part 3 - The Forge of Eternity

Athena visits Yebisi Netoshi Master Weaponcrafter at the Forge of Eternity with a note from Lepridis Ueld requesting his aid. Master Yebisi, who speaks with a faint foreign accent, is a very skilled crafter using techniques known only to himself. He demonstrates some of his magical capabilities by transforming his skin into what looked like metal when he inspects Athena's ancestral Greatsword. He concluded that to enchant, it will require a significant recasting of the blade. He is willing to undertake the work and will discuss the terms tomorrow.

Part 4 - Visitors in the Night

The Boar and the Spike Inn is almost empty, and the Heroes rest for the night. Their sleep is interrupted as assassins sneak in and attack. These are foreign Monks, worshipers of Agrik, and their strikes appeared infused heat and flames. Their leader is a particularly skilled warrior, and he almost kills the unarmored Athena. Only the quick action of Quazzy and Yureb saved her life. The assassins are defeated, with one subdued, the rest killed.

Part 5 - Interrogation and False Memories

The evidence of the battle is cleaned up, and the dead assassin bodies moved into a room with the captive. Athena interrogates the Monk, named Tawin, who is more than willing to die, but under the pressure when promised an honorable quick death, tells Athena the following.

He is a Monk from a small monastery in the Sasalan Mountains, located in the distant Azeryan Empire, on a pilgrimage to join wars and perform assassinations. His party volunteered to fight in the ongoing Rethemi Civil War.

King of Rethem has sent a mission to the Lythian Mainland recruiting mercenaries to fight in the war on his side. This group is led by Sir Idmear, a Knight Commander of the Red Shadows of Hepra and Ralgin Hamlin. They are operating out of a large warehouse in the Alienage. The mercenary army, over 250 strong, is mostly based out of 2 large warships is also docked in the Alienage. The Alienage is a separately walled district of the City, essentially a foreign quarter.

Athena knows Ralgin Hamlin well. His family is responsible for the betrayal and murder of her family. He is the older brother of her former betrothed Gerharn Hamlen. She wants revenge.

Ralgin was traveling the City and spotted Athena on the streets before she saw him and managed to avoid her. He Sasalan Fire Monk squad to assassinate Athena, after somehow learning of where she was staying. That is all Tawin appears to know.

Rather than killing their captive, Quazzy Modifies his Memory. The Monk now believes that he succeeded in his mission to kill Athena, and he is the only survivor of his squad. He leaves the Inn and travels across the City, stealthily crossing over the wall into the Alienage, entering a guarded warehouse.
