Session 127 - The Wasps Nest

Jolanta and her trusty bodyguard Blaine are agents of the mysterious Order of the White Hand, hunting down unscrupulous mages and covering up magical mishaps.

Part 1 - Mission 2 - The Wasp Nest

After a month of studying, Jolanta is given another mission by Viran Ceredig Yerwold, leader of the Order of the White Hand. The outlying manor of Oniek, west of the Leonese Marshes, has reported sightings of huge wasps. These insects are reportedly the size of a cat, have been recently spotted in the Marsh, and are highly aggressive. Viran Ceredig recalls a reference to magical events in that area and recommends some books in the Guildhalls library to read. Jolanta spends some time researching lore on that location and on large insects. She learns that the People of the Dusk had a holy site nearby, and there may have been a Fyvria Sanactum allegedly used during the later Eldritch Period. This Sanctum was a stone monolith with a maze pattern carved on it; however, it was lost as the mash expanded. She also learns that the dangerous poisons of wasp do not kill their prey but paralyze them so they can lay their eggs in the immobile bodies.

Jolanta meets Shenava Onreall, an expert apothecary and with natural magic, and convinces him to brew some insect repellant for her. Then Jolanta and Blaine make their way to Oniek Manor.

Part 2 - Stings

Oniek is a small frontier settlement with a population of a little over 100 people. It has a small fort, and its economy is based around water birds, mudfish, large frogs, and the abundant large quantity of rare herbs found in the Leonese Marshes. The Giant wasp problem is the talk at the small Inn. Jolanta stays the night and enters the Marshes the next morning.

The Heroes find nothing of interest on their first day. Huge frogs attack them and at night are attacked by a Black Bear recently woken from hibernation and hungry. Early on the second day, Jolanta spots in the distance a stone monolith and nearby a strange structure similar to an enormous wasps nest. Approaching three massive wasps attack and are defeated, although Blaine feels the pain of their stings.

Sneaking up, the heroes dose themselves with the Insect repellent and attack. Six Giant Wasps emerge from the nest and attack. The insect repellant is partially effective, with half their number initially hesitant to attack. Blaine is stung multiple times and nearly paralyzed, but eventually, they are destroyed mostly by Jolanta's magic. One is put to sleep and collected as a gift to Shenava Onreall for his potion.

Part 3 - The Monolith

Nearby is a very ill, paralyzed man with a nasty growth on his side. Unsure what to do, Jolanta takes an enormous risk, summons a ball of electricity and cauterizes the injury, and then applies medicine to the dying man. He narrowly survives the wasp larvae growing in his body are destroyed. He is Temra the Herbalist, and when he is helped back to Oniek village, he rewards Jolanta with some herbal potions. She learns from him that the Monument has emerged as the Marsh receded in this area over the last few decades. Before they leave, Jolanta disintegrates the wasp nest and examines the Monument. She determines that it enhances nature's magic but does not make sense of the strange maze-like symbol inscribed on it.

She reports back to the guildhall in Cherafir and gives the Veran Onreall a living giant wasp specimen. Some guild members are interested in the Monolith of Oniek and plan to study it later on in the year.
